Subject: Lower Shock bolt...HELP!! IP: Logged
Message: '98 2wd V6 CC. Changing front shocks last night and broke both lower shock bolts on the drivers side due to excessive rust. Local Dodge parts dept is not open until tomorrow morning...Where can a person find an auto-quality bolt to replace this?...
Anyone have problems with the shock rod turning in place and making it very difficult(impossible) to remove the front upper shock nut? I've tried a vice grip but you cant get a solid grip on the rod through the front spring, and it just continues turning....Any suggestions would be appreciated.....

Message: A regular home hardware store sells everything from grade 2 to grade 8 hardware. For a shock i would go with a regular grade 5 bolt, there isn't much stress on them. As for the top nut, usually if you zip it with an impact gun it will come right off. Also a parts store might carry the special socket that you use to break the shock bolt off. I usually cut them off with a torch.

Message: I just changed all four shocks on my 93 Dakota.
I didn't have any problem with any of the lower bolts. But the upper ones in the front were a bear. Either get yourself a nut splitter and crack it off, or do what I did: I made slots in shock piston with a Dremel tool so that my vice grips would grab it. Then I was able to twist the nut and actually I twisted the shaft off. Doesn't matter though, since that was enough to get it off.
