Subject: Octane and Oil Grade IP: Logged
Message: I wasn't too happy with my V6 performance so when it came to oil change time I decided to try 5W-30 instead of the recommended 10W-30 and went to 89 octane fuel. It runs alot easier and seems to have more power now. I figured with the cold weather the thinner oil wouldn't hurt, but I thought I'ld ask and see what everyone thinks. As far as the higher octane goes the pinging under load has all but disappeared.

Message: In the winter time I run 5w-30. these maine winters can be pretty harsh, this year was no exception.
and I also run 89 octane, my truck runs better and I don't get that knock or ping whatever you want to call it.
no problems with the engine yet, 107,000 miles.
I'm not the orginal owner, but I know him and knew what he ran in the truck.

Message: the v6 dakotas develop preignition detonation sounds as soon as they get more than a few miles- dodge came up with a computer fix in 2000 , that involves a new computer plug in, it drops power and mpg by about 20%-- moving to a cooler spark plug helps, and putting higher octane gas also- this engine runs too hot nternally and has poorly desined cooling system-- ebeverything on it is poorly engineered- I use it for work every day - 98 extended cab- 3.9 4x4 with 3.92 rear end- auto tranny - - 74k miles -- lotta repairs suspension is not strong-

Message: Mine is a 2000 Sport Ext.
I run short trips mostly and the engine never gets to operating temp. Which is why I thought 5w-30 wouldn't hurt, but intend to change back to 10w-30 when summer gets here.
Seems to run better.
