Message: Sorry about takin so long to respond to ya, i was in the garage fabin' up a bracket for a bike ramp and shock mounts for a jeep.
TDC is when the piston is at the very top of its stroke..on the compression stroke both valves are all the way closed.
as for the reason you werent at tdc, there are many marks on the harmonic balencer, one for each cyl, the mark that isnt just a little notch, it goes all the way across, that is for #1.
as for turning the crank, the easiest way is from the bottom but you cant see what you are doing so you have to do it from the top.
Wade, you will probably pick up a couple mpg's made a huge difference in my truck, i am going to try and accomplish my crank sensor mod tomorrow afternoon. Good luck guys.

i almost forgot, yes i sat in my engine compartment while doing mine, but on the newer body style (98 5.2) i did it from a stool over the passenger fender. but you really do need to look as straight as possible over it.
