Message: i think the 3.9's biggest problem is tuning and technology. everybody is lookin for power and performance and you need to rememeber that the 3.9 is stemming from 60's technology. that being said, do a little work, injector sync, intake, exhaust and the truck runs pretty decent. i have to say that checking my injector sync probably made the biggest improvement in my truck out of anything i have done, 3 mpg and a TON more power. i was sure i was going to sell it, but now im not so sure.

They are set at the factory anywhere from -6 to
0 they run a hell of a lot better from +3 to +6
better low end throttle response and gas mileage
will be noticed imeditly by doing this
The dealers are not alowed to go more than 0 and
-6 is normal setting

1 degree on dist = 2 crank the intake opens 8
degrees before TDC and fireing the injector just
after this opens will catch it when both valves

Fireing the injector at 0 TDC you will miss this

Message: ok, i will explain it myself then.
1. Put the motor at TDC on the compression stroke (rotor will be pointing toward the passenger side (cyl number 1))
2. if you havent already pull off the distributor cap and look straight down over the rotor. there will be a line marked "cyl #1"
3. The front rotor should be pointing either directly at this line or slightly toward the cab of your truck. this is 0 to +3
4. if it is not in that position (which it wont be) loosen the distributor and turn it so that the rotor is positioned on that line or a "rotor width" toward the cab.
O____ = +3
as if O was the rotor and _____ was the cyl line.
O---- = 0
______
O = Bad
5. Tighten the distributor (1/2" bolt), put the cap and wires back on and go for a drive.

Message: who really knows why they set it negative. maybe because they have stock in oil companies and want your money? maybe because machine tolerances and/or un-skilled workers are incapable of making it set to +3 or +6. you would have to ask dodge that question, we can only speculate, all i know is that my truck runs ALOT better.

Message: by the way your detail (larry and 93dak4x4) is really good and I plan on doing this and giving you guys results too. I have a 99 dakota 4x4 w/ 3.9. only thing I ask is what do you mean when you say "1. Put the motor at TDC on the compression stroke"? everything else is clear.
I don't know much about messing with the distributer caps on these trucks at all, and i guess i heard ur not suppose to turn it a certain direction or it will mess it up?
The only time ive messed with dist caps is on my Dad's 1969 restored Camaro conv. w/ 350. Obviously he taught me how to work on it and its easy as pie compared to todays vehicles. Thanks

Message: Nice, clear explanation. Two questions:
1) I have read that you have to crawl on top of the motor to look straight down at the index mark on the dist. I know the dist is buried back there, is the best access point to crawl in and sit on the fenderwell?
2) What is the best access point for turning the crankshaft? Underneath? The clutch fan seems to be in the way from above.

Message: alright, i'm at TDC, got the cap off, see the cyl 1 line, distributor is pointing a little bit toward the front of truck (in the negative a few degrees.)
now, how do i actually loosen the distributor to turn it toward the cab to the + side?
kind of a bitch to get back there, tihs woulda been great to do when i had the manifold off doing the belly pan/gasket match lol

Message: alright i found it, the 1/2" under the dist on the passenger side. tight squeeze back there.
just got back from a quick spin. notice a little low end response, just kinda ran around the block though, idle seemed slightly smoother. i only gave it a nudge counterclockwise though, maybe it needs a tad more. guess i'll see driving to work tonight and with checking my mileage, maybe i'll give it a little bit more of a turn when i get back from work tonight. thanks a bunch larry & 93dak!

Message: Ok guys, i feel like a complete idiot, im sorry for all the questions on this matter, but i like to be very thorough when doing a task i have failed in the past, non-theless, i found i was not quite at TDC yet, with a small turn, VIOLA!!! and then i found the 1/2" bolt with ease and done deal, took it for a spin and noticed a HUGE!! pick-up in low end, and as for the gas milage we will see..
I appreciate all of your help and patience...
and for those of you wanting to do this, but still a little confused, write me at cstmdak@aol.com (i took pics of step by step)
soon as i can get them all up i will post it for the rest of the people here...
