i believe that the splice problem only occurs on gen II trucks. (92-96) therefore your 98 would not have that splice in the same spot.

My brother in law's 91' dakota 3.9L had the same problem. I traced it all the way to the auto shut down relay, it was getting 12 volt to the relay, and 12volt to the coil when the key was turned on. But the common from the WOT relay was not there. Removed the shutdown relay, jumped across the contacts and it cranked fine. when I shut it off, removed the jumper, and installed the relay it cranked and ran fine. I guess when it overheated due to a stuck thermostat, it tripped the WOT.

95 dodge dakota v6 3.9l it all started a couple weeks ago with back fireing and sputtering while driveing and it also liked to stall when at red lights or when putting it in reverse now i was just driving it yesterday and it shut off while i was doing like 60mph so i pull over and wait for a tow truck and once i was waiting i popped the hood and just started checking for things and realized i wasnt getting spark so i checked all spark plugs and conections and everything was good and as soon as the truck driver got there it had started up so he had followed me to my house and once i got there he left but i had left my truck running while i went inside to get something and i came back out and it had shut off i tryed starting it again and no start and thats how its been sitting since yestered day

There is a splice in the wiring harness about 4 to 6
inches below the fusebox. 4 wires into one, red or
red/white, check the splice for corrosion. It is a
common problem with the older Daks. That splice
distribute power to the coil, PCM and ASD and will
cause the problems you describe. It's an easy fix.
