I have a 98 Dak with 3.9L. Last week I replaced the thermostat because the temp gauge was going back and forth between 160 and 250. Just for a bit of history here is what it would do. I would start off to work and about 2 miles into my trip, I will notice that my temp guage is creeping up. If I keep driving (usually about 30 seconds) the gauge will would drop down to normal (195) levels. do I replaced the thermostat. It worked great for about a week, but now its started up again. I have noticed that if I turn the heater on, I get no heat for a long long time, and when I finally get heat... I get the most heat with the fan on low/med. If the fan is on high, it will just blow cold air (even when its like 80 out) I have no idea what direction to turn next. I called my mechanic that does my big stuff for me, and he said it may be a fan clutch. I am so confused. Anyone want to buy a 98 Dak SLT? CHEAP!

As for your coolant system, you have air in it. You will need to take the cap off, start the eng and let it run. once the eng gets hot enough to open the thermostat, you will see the coolant circulating. Add coolant to fill up. You may also need a new cap. The system will draw from the overflow tank as it cools down from each trip. Your heater core needs to be flushed. There are two hoses going into your firewall, one is the inlet, and one is the outlet. You will have to buy a hose repair kit to cut the hose coming from your water pump and disconnect the other hose from the stem next to the thermostat housing. Use the garden hose to flush water through the heater hose coming off your pump, and look at the color of the crap coming out of the other hose. reconnect the hoses and try that.
