Subject: Cold Air Intake Mod? IP: Logged
Message: I was just wondering if anyone has had any problems with making a home brew cold air intake with some kind of a cone K&N filter and with taking that rubber flap off next to your radiator? I live just north of Seattle and it rains a whole hell of a lot - will the rain soak my filter causing it to plug up and suck itself inside my engine? (or any other problems not so dramatic) If not, do any of you have the dimensions I would need for the pipe or where I could find such information to make a real good intake? - '03 Dak RC 2WD 3.9L 5spd

Message: I just built mine a few weeks ago. I don't have it installed yet still need to get the k&n. I built mine with two fenco rubber coupling two 45 degree pvc elbows and an 8" piece of 3" stright pvc. Just make sure that when you glue the pieces together that they are tight together. I've gotta go back and find a way to fill in the gap between the pieces to smooth it all out. I you have any problem e mail me and i might be able to help you out.

Message: basic highschool chemistry-pvc has a very low melting point, when it does eventually melt this summer and drips on your exhaust manifold, it will produce clorine gas, in WWI chlorine gas was known as mustard gas for it's yellow tint. It will burn and destroy your lungs, and maybe even kill you if you can't get away soon enough. There is safer but slightly more expensive plastic drain pipe at the local plumbing/home center that does not kill when it gets hot, and has a higher melt/burn resistance. Use that instead. it is ABS plastic.

Message: 03SXT,
I live in Seattle and I feel you on the rain. I'm actually trying to get a group buy on the 360 air intakez system. if you are interested email me chiangs@seattleu.edu, retail on it now is 130, so hopefully i can get a good deal with enough people on the buy.

Message: well as far as pvc melting easily, i can say the day i installed my CAI i had to run down the store a few miles away, i only had tightened the clamps, not used any cement, i got back and opened the hood and it had broken away from the Hat and was laying 2 inches from the valve covers and didnt melt on a 60 degree day so im not too worried

Message: Ok look, the facts are that PVC does have a lower melting temp than other plastic pipes you could use. I dont think anyone is saying that if you use PVC that your pipe will melt but, why not just spend a few extra $$$ and not have to risk it. Cause when your PVC pipe does melt and cause a bunch of gas or let a bunch of crap get sucked up into your TB you'll wish you spent a few extra dollars to avoid it. It's just logical of course you might be able to run your PVC intake without ever having a problem, your choice.

Message: You can build an intake out of mandrel bent tubing approximately 3"id and it is best to use silicon couplings instead of the ferncos. You can buy the mandrel bends in a 180 piece of pipe and mark it with a permanent marker for the cuts you need and put the filter anywhere you want to, rather easily. Total cost is about 60-70 bucks.
