Hi all,

Had the same problem with my '97 Dak. New water pump and t-stat about a year ago. Never had any decent heat in the damned thing. Tried Dan's backflush and now my kids are bitching because Dad's truck is too hot!

Thanks Dan!

You can't argue with success. I flushed the entire cooling system after I back flushed the heater core, got more crap out, then after a couple weeks flushed the heater core again. I have a very sensitive thermometer that I put in the center air outlet on the dash. After yesterdays second back flush I have just short of 170 deg coming out of the heater outlets. Nice and toasty.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL YOU FOLKS OUT THERE.

This sounds like heater flush time. I've done three Dakotas now and this has been the answer for all three. Reading thru all the other posts it sounds like the universal place to start. I found that if there is a lot of crud you will want to consider a complete system flush IN ADDITION TO the separate heater core flush. And don't be suprised if you have to flush the heater core a couple of times in the future to assure all the junk is out. And while I'm on a roll here, don't forget to check out those BALL JOINTS. Replaced mine at 80,000. Left upper was almost completely separated, the other three very loose.

Add another fix Dan! I used the prestone flushing TEE connected to the output hose. I clamped a padded vise-grip between the Tee and the waterpump to ensure all the water from the hose went into the core. I disconted the input hose where the factory splice is on the passenger side and placed it into a bucket. I only got a little gunk out before the water turned clear so I wasn't expecting much of an improvement but it worked! I now have HOT air coming out of the vents like it used to. Thanks Dan

I found Dan's flushing instructions. It seems I am having the same heat problems as everybody else after I replaced my water pump. I look foreward to giving it a try.
Thanks Dan

Hey Rob27,

I had the same issue. First, make sure you BACK flushed the heater core and didn't simply flush it...I made the mistake of just flushing and not Back Flushing. Anyway, you may also have an air lock going on since the hose to the thermostat is slightly above the radiator. Take off the radiator cap, start the engine and get it up to temp....as it's getting up to temp, squeeze the hose that is attached to the t-stat and top off the radiator, you'll notice air bubbles when you squeeze the hose. Let it warm up real good and then check your heat. The bottom line is to be sure you Back Flushed and didn't simply Flush it the same way the coolant flows! Good Luck!

I am glad I found this post. This is the exact problem I have with my '93 Dakota. I had the radiator replaced by a shop a couple of years ago and there has been less heat since. I tried to get air out by running with the cap loose, have flushed the system and did a bit of shivering.

I think Dan has given me the solution to my problem. I hope to go from my truck cab being an unheated icehouse to a sauna. It's January and I need the heat!

Don, just replaced the resistor on my daughter's 2001 Dakota for the "high speed only" problem. On the 2001 its located under the dash, in the ductwork, passenger area. You will see two hex screws that fasten the mounting to the ductwork. Kind of an odd angle to get to but otherwise an easy change. Dave

I read Dan's flush instructions but I have to admit I can't figure out what hoses/splices and such he is talking about. I am not even sure where the heater core is. I found the waterpump though.

Here are the original instructions, "What you have to do is get a 5/8 inch female garden hose adapter. This can be purchased at just about any hardware store. Make sure it is the kind that slips inside the garden hose. Then with the engine cool you need to disconnect the outlet hose of the heater core from the engine. You need to do this at the water pump connection, which should be on the driver's side of the engine. Then insert the garden hose adapter into the end of the hose. Then disconnect the heater core inlet hose from the engine connection. On my Dakota this is easily done at the splice that is on the passengers side of the engine. This splice is where you normally connect to flush out the coolant system. Then hook a garden hose up to the outlet hose and turn on the water. Have someone help you turn on and off the water as you flush out the heater core. Try and collect at least the first 2 gallons of stuff you flush out and dispose of this according to your local laws. After the first 2 gallons all you should get out of your heater core is dirty water. This should be ok to just dump on the ground but make sure first. You will probably have to flush the core for a good 5 minutes to fully clean it out. Then reconnect your heater hoses as they were and enjoy the heat."

I have a '93 dakota. I see a hose going to the waterpump but I don't see the splice on the passenger side he is talking about?

I do have 2 hoses going into the firewall and one goes into the waterpump, should I put the 5/8ths thing there, with the waterhose, and unhook the other firewall hose and let it pump out there?

Sorry to be so car illiterate, I would appreciate any help I can get. thanks

I have the same problem with mine but only when its below 45 out. My t-stat will not go any higher the 165. When the heat is on it drops to 140. What could be causing this to happen. I know that is not a plugged heater core both ports of the core are HOT.
Aslo when its above 45 the t-stat will read around 195. when heat is on drops to 165.
could it be the Radiator. Any ideas????

Hello, I have a 97 dakota and when I turn the heater dial it makes no difference to the temperature either on heat or cool or air conditioning. Is this possibly a cable problem. Thanks
