Subject: 3.9V6 engine replacement IP: Logged
Message: My engine picked up a rod knock. I called the local salvage yard and they want to sell me a 3.9V6 from a Carivan. Does anyone know if this is interchangable?? If so are there any major obsticals to installation? Thanks

Message: Not sure what has to be changed to make the caravan engine work in the dak. Why not just change the rod bearings and inspect the crank? They can be done with the engine in the truck. I would never junk an engine for that unless the rod actually broke and there is a hole in the block :)

Message: best of my knowledge caravan never came with a 3.9...sure it was,nt a full size van?
if its a rod bearing you might want to check on a crank kit from a parts store NAPA,CARQUEST etc. if the rest of your motor is sound.could save you $$$$$$.

Message: dude no way that motor is comming out of a caravan. Caravan's have transverse mount motors of 3.0,3.3,3.8 liters. Motor may have come from a full size van. As far as the swap goes you have an obd2 vehicle the motor is from an obd1. I am not sure, but would guess that there are sensors that are needed for the 98 computer that are not on the 94 engine. As long as the top end of your motor is in good shape you should be ok. If ya got anymore question, e-mail me amburke@frontiernet.net

Message: find another salvage yard the one you called has idiopts on the telephone the 3.9 and ANY engine in a caravan are different engine blocks and are not easily interchanged. use only a 97 or newer 3.9 the wireing on a 96 is the same but the wiring on a 96 was full of trouble, the 97 up engines are all the same and have a better wiring harness on them.
