actually, the V6 should be filled with 4.5 quarts... that's what the book says.

From the FSM's:
'97-'98 is 3.5 qts w/filter.
'99 is 4.0 qts w/filter.
'00+ is 4.5 qts w/filter.
Dodge...Different (every stinkin year) ;)

Nope...I had filled my '97 V6 with 4qts (and new filter) when I did my first oil change and it was too much. 3.5qts max on mine. I also checked in my owners manual and it also states 3.5qt. (Page 178 - Fluid Capacities)

Hey Bernd, my 2000 owner's manual calls for 4 quarts with oil and filter. And 4 quarts fills it exactly to the full mark. My truck was built early in 2000 (Oct 99). Why all the differences??

I honestly don't know why the changes in oil capacity. "Dodge...Different".

I just purchased a '91 Dakota with the 3.9 V6 without an owners manual. My Haynes manual says 4 quarts, is this right? Any input is appreciated.

I was lucky, my '91 had the owner's manual when I got it...
Per the owner's manual:
4 quarts,
4.5 quarts with new filter

I put 4 quarts oil and one quart Lucas Oil Treatment and it is right where it is supposed to be on the dipstick. I'm not hurting anything with that much am I?

Yea, my Haynes Manual states 4 Quarts on my '98. Seems to be just a tad bit over the fullmark when I change and refill.

i have a 1997 dakota..i put 5 quarts AMSOIL in it and it is just a touch over full with a new filter..chrysler tech training center in charlottle nc says it takes 4.85 quarts of oil with a new filter..

4 qts is what my truck is.a guy at the dealership told me when changing oil in a dodge they usually keep it to the amount of liters the engine is as a guide line.eg.3.9 liter takes 3.9 liters of oil.can't say i know if he's right but it works for mine and my buddys 4.7(he's 5 but close enough)

MY Y2K Owners manual says 4Qt. with filter
change but my Y2K FSM says 4.5Qt.with filter
change went with owners manual stick reads full
mark with 4 Qts.soooooooooo I'll stay with 4Qt.
better little less than too much
