Subject: hiss and NO power IP: Logged
Message: I'm getting this hiss when I'm at 2200 rpm and after that I don't get much go after that. On a hill that I don't have any problems going up in 5th, I had to downshift to 4th, but even that didn't give me anymore speed. My tach shows that the rpms don't climb as fast as they used to either. My cat is rattling again, but I didn't have this hiss and lack of power with previous cat problems. Would a vacuum leak be the problem? I don't know much about engines, so I'm most likely going to take it to my garage. By the way, I have a little over 100,000 miles and its a '98 3.9L with a flowmaster exhaust.

Message: LOL Midas..I thought maybe his clutch sequencer was the problem.
MM, sounds like your cat may have gone south. If it fell apart inside, it may allow sufficent flow a lower RPMs to make some power. Easy to check out. Rip it off and go for a quick drive. If need to replace it and your going to keep the truck for a while, spend the bucks and get a quality replacement. If not, put some cheap POS on it and let the next guy worry about it.

Message: im going to keep the truck till it dies. i got the extended warranty on the cat, so im going to bitch and get it replaced. im thinking the reason why im not getting any power is because that o2 sensor went. Plus, my "check engine" light came on. thanks for the info.

Message: justa4x2..I more thing on replacing that cat. If you can, watch the guy that installes it. If he picks up a hammer to beat the pipes together, go over, take the hammer from him and wack him in the head with it. More cats are damaged with a hammer than driving. The pips should just slide together with a snug fit.

Message: I saw the Pips slide together once. Gladys went one way, and they went the other. Very embarrassing.

Message: I have a little older 3.9 (92). I had to replace the intake manifold at about 50K because I had vacuum problems. I was pulling air through the PVC valve. Try taking the valve out at idle and see if it is pulling a vacuum through the hole. I first noticed it because I had a high idle 1200 RPM
