Subject: Why won't this thing idle??

Alright, so I'm one of the lucky few to have an 87 3.9 with a carburator. And now the thing won't idle right. The idleing is turned all the way up and it still doesn't idle all the time. There are no vaccume leaks, the plugs are new, as well as the wires, coil, pickup coil, distributer cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, so what else could it be?

Some times it will idle too high, but most times not at all, then it may go a week or so and idle fine again. I thought maybe the carb migh be the problem so I asked around and for a rebuilt carb they want $375!!! So I asked about a rebuild kit because I have rebuilt a few carbs and the kit is usually about $20, but they said no one makes them. What can/should I do now??

Check for water in your gas first and check for plugged fuel filter/s. Get some carb cleaner and really clean that baby. Check for fouled spark plugs. Worst case could be fuel pump get the pressure checked.

Sorry didn't see that you had checked the fuel filter, spark plugs. Try some autowreckers they might have a carb from an 87. When my car wouldn't idle they wanted $425 for a rebuilt carb I said screw that and went to a wrecker and got one. Worked perfect after.

Ajax,

87 daks are notorious for having Oxygen sensor problems, I have had 2 of them, when they go go bad it will cause ideling problems, loss of power and gas mileage. The 87's need to have their O2 sensor changed every 60,000 miiles. Also try running a product you can get at the Auto Parts called HEET or Heat. It suppose to help with water in the gas. If you have water in the gas you may have to change the fuel filter more than once.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.
