Message: i just got a 2002 dakota sport 3.9 5 spd. Its real nice, i like it. But i've filled the tank like two times already in a week, its crazy on gas! Will putting an intake on help with MPG? or will it make it worse? Cooler air means more gas correct? I am averaging 10-11 MPG combined highway and city and driving conservatively!

Message: actually it should increase gas mileage. truck
will run more effecient. i mena your not gonna add
5 miles to each gallon but you'll add a little to
it. theres a ton of intake choices out there. you
can even make your own. but a good K&N filter or
somethin similar wil work great for your truck.
and welcome to the wonderful life of Dakota
ownership

Message: I've got a 2002 Sport V6 automatic, and I got 17mpg the last time I checked it. That's with an intake, headers, Dynomax, and an F&B TB on it. Are you really driving as conservatively as you think you are? Warming up your truck for 20 minutes in the morning, sitting in fast food drive throughs at lunchtime, jackrabbit starts, perhaps? Even the 3.9's aren't known for good gas mileage, but it should be easy to beat 10 or 11, especially if the truck is running OK. Just wondering...

Message: i'm sorry, misfigured my math. I'm getting 15-16 mpg and i've recently put a K&N drop in in place of the factory. Will they work as good as a cold air intake?

Message: Before you go chasing better MPG with a bunch of other stuff here is a list I posted before.
Tune up
New air filter( K&N )
Correct tire pressure
Wheel alignment
Switch to all syn. lubricants including bearings,trans/transfer,u-joints,etc. (less rolling resistance)
Use the octane of fuel recommended for your engine.
A good wax job (less air resistance)
"J" gap and Index the spark plugs.
Driving style.
Yesterday I took a trip. My old 94 3.9/5spd/4X4/x-cab averaged 22 mpg. The only mods are the V8 TB and K&N filter. The best to date was 23.9.
