Message: One of my manifold bolts has broken off. I have never touched these damn things. I was changing the oil when I noticed the broken bolt. My Dak is a 3.9 and I would like to know if this is common. Now, I am getting a lot hiss when the truck is cold and started. When I give it gas a loud moan comes from under the hood. Can this damage my engine?

Message: My 99 has 2 broken bolts on the right hand side
The 2 forward ones let go awhile ago.I'ts kind of
loud on start up but quiets down in about 30 secs.
when a little heat builds. I'm going to tackle this
job soon as shop Quotes are 3-4 hrs about $300
for labor alone. Need to remove Air filter box
(easy) and inner fender (pain in the a**) to
get drill on broken bolts squarely. AC lines
will also be a concern as they are right there
along inner fender. I may end up inventing a
new sware word or two before it's done.

Message: Same problem with my 95 Dak 3.9. First one bolt head then the other. The front two on the right side broke off. It seems like a common problem. To save money I bought a right angle Craftsman drill ($139). You can get attachments for a regular drill for a lot less. I bought some "easy outs" and went to work. I removed the manifold, drilled holes on the broken bolts, and took them out. Replaced them with grade 9 bolts from the local Ace hardware. Problem solved. And I still have the drill.

Message: If the manifold is not leaking don't worrie about
the broken studs.
Unless your installing headers than it needs to be
fixed.
They come right from the factory with broken studs
not a nice thing to find but true

Message: same here, (98 rc 3.9 52k and some change) the second one from the front (driver's side) bolt broke off. I thought it was a noisy lifter, but in reality it was the broken bolt. the other one holding the heat shield, is intact for now. and the broken one was flapping around, attached to the shield and slapping the side of the engine! i was relived and pi$$ed at the same time.

Message: My exhaust is quiet as a mouse now, no more huge leak from the manifold. I tried to extract the bolts with a left handed drill bit, but it broke, so I went to plan B. I just used a regular drill bit and drilled it out right in the center. I found some new bolts, and used some gasket maker, and it is sweet now. Took like 1.5 hours for one side.
