Subject: why swap the t-stat? IP: Logged
Message: i've seen a lot of you guys talk about swaping out the stock temp stat for a 180 degree stat and i was just wondering how this would affect my perfomance if my truck already runs fairly cool.
thanks

Message: The Magnum engines run best at 182-185 degrees. It won't affect emissions either.

Message: thats true down south in dixie but up here where I just moved to in Minnesota ( hi josh you said you are living here) in the wintertime the darn thing won't go into closed loop when it is really cold, When west Texas is at 50 degrees Minnesota is sometimes at 20 below. At that temp running at 60 mph sends enough cold air into the engine compartment that it never warms up to more then 175 degrees and I end up slowing down to warm up the engine, so the expense and time just ain't worth it. Not all the "advice" you get on here works in the real world.

Message: That's a given with any t'stat (factory 195 as well) on the wind chill cooling effect on the radiator. Fact remains, 195 or 200 is for emissions purposes...GM, Ford, Mopar, and many Imports all run best at 180-185.

Message: heres the scoop on the t stats. in the winter, you should run a hotter one because it will obviously keep everything warmer. also, you will get better fuel mileage because the fuel is already warmed more, flows better, and just helps out. rite now, i have a 195 in there and it is nice to have.
