 Subject: Tough to Solve Fuel Problem

My 95 Dakota runs intermitently rough when the gas goes below 1/2 tank, but not everytime. So far I've had the gas tank drained, tune up, new spark plug wires, two fuel injectors replaced, new catalitic coverter. What's left? No computer chip problems showing up. Can't think it's anything but electrical left. Suggestions?

What was wrong with the 2 fuel injectors that were replaced? Usually when an injector goes bad the others aren't far behind so i like to replace all of them at once.

I noticed you did not say you replaced the fuel pump.
The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel in the tank and when the fuel level get's low enough the pump may be overheating. I hope this is not it as the fuel pump costs a lot of money. :(
I agree with Jon, the injectors may be an issue. Did you check into getting the injectors cleaned?

Had a mechanic do all the work. Read another post about the CAT, went through all that and the hissing (MOPAR junk) In time I'll replace the new CAT with a High Flow Cat. All the work was over the last six months. Just never seem to get it right. The last effort was last week. My mechanic said fuel pump pressure was good. He only replaced two injectors though. I just got it back from the shop so we'll see how it goes. So far so good.

I have a 95 Dakota with the same problem at 1/2 tank of fuel the truck starts to sputter and looses acceleration. Some one told me their Dakota had the same problem. They suggested that it might be the fuel pump in the tank at low fuel would fall over not allowing enough fuel to be pumped. At high fuel it runs perfect.So maybe you should check the brackets on the fuel pump inside the gas tank. Tim

Thanks, I'm just getting to half a tank after the past work, if it acts up I'll check the fuel pump bracket.

If it acts up agian, have the mechanic do a amp test on the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is pulling more current than it should then it is starting to fail. This will cause it to slow down which would cause your poor run condition.

Got to a 1/4 of a tank this morning and ran so rough I thought I wouldn't get to work. Filled to 1/2 a tank and it was okay. I don't think the fuel pump is inside the tank via a bracket. It sits sort of on top in the center of the tank from the pictures I looked at. I think the amp test is a good idea, my thoughts are that the fuel pump is starting to go and though when checked it had good pressure I think it has to be the problem and needs to be replaced. I'm not familar with the fuel sending unit. I'll have to check that out in my newly purchased repair book for Dakotas. I gave up being my own mechanic 15 years ago when computer chips etc... got beyond my ability.

I saw a set of fuel injectors off of a 5.2L ram that looked to have all kind of crap in there. that mechanic told me that was probably my problem

DO THE PUMP YOURSELF.
6 BOLTS FOR THE BED, A COUPLE OF TAIL LIGHT WIRES TO UNPLUG, REMOVE THE SPARE HOIST ROD, AND 4 SCREWS TO THE FILLER NECK.
GET A 12 PACK AND A BUDDY. TO LIFT OFF THE BED.
SIMPLEY UNSCREW THE PUMP RETAINING RING AND LIFT IT OUT DROP IN THE NEW ONE AND TURN THE KEY.(PICK UO 2 STAINLESS STEEL HOSE CLAMPS {1/2"}TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL JUST IN CASE)
NOT WORTH THE LABOUR AT A DEALERSHIP. EASIER THAN CHANGING THE STOCK AIR FILTER, OTHER THAN THE WEIGHT OF THE BED.
JUST BECAREFUL OF THE SHARP BUMPER AS IT "WILL" CHIP THE PAINT... IF I HAD TO DO IT AGAIN I WOULD REMOVE THE 6 BOLTS IN THE BUMPER AND DROP IT TOO. YOUR BUDDY CAN HOLD IT BACK UP ON INSTALLATION.
I HAD THE SAME ON A 94 V6 2WD. 1/4 TANK OF FUEL AND THE PUMP WOULD CRAP OUT, WORKED FINE ABOVE THIS>> NOTICED THE PROB IN MAY AND WENT TILL OCT WHEN THE PUMP DIED AND WAS REPLACE. FINE SINCE

below half will run hotter and intermitently

It was the fuel pump. After replacing it I haven't had any more problems.
