Subject: All dak experts please come forward IP: Logged
Message: Just bought an '88 Dakota 3.9L and went to Advance Auto for oil and air filters and tuneup parts etc. Well, it seems that what was on the vehicle was an air filter for a '88 and an oil filter for a '91. This could mean nothing, but I would like to know what year the motor is. Here is the engine I.D. #'s: 4323730-V6-6. Can anyone decode this and tell me what model year my motor is?
Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Message: The Gen 1 motors up to 1990 used a small oil filter for example ph3614 after 91 they used they ph16 so dont worry about it the ph16 is perfect for your truck just a lot more filter capacity I personally use the ph8a on my Gen 2. As for the year of the block I cant help you out there but maybe someone else can.

Message: found a problem a while back and stopped using fram filters
there are 2 ph16 filters . theres the ph16 and then theres the ph 16a
the threads are totally different and the filter is almost identical when held next to one another.
the jobber store had a full shelf of ph 16's that had the wrong thread ,but listed for the 3.9. another shop i went found a listing for a ph16a that wasd actually the right filter .
i dont know who goofed but next they may forget to install the element ,dont bother with fram
