Subject: timing chain question IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering if anyone else had a kinda clunking/rattling noise up front near the engine. I have read earlier about this that it is a problem with the timing chain. I know this needs to be replaced and read on thefastman.com that Dan recommends the "PRO GEAR TIMING CHAIN." Is this the same thing as the stock timing chain or will this in fact help with timing in some way. Has anyone heard of this or replaced the timing chain - the noise irritates me to death. Any help on this is appreciated, i am looking to replace the chain as soon as possible but would like some help on this topic.
Thanks in advance guys.

Message: Last friday my water pump went bad. and since my dak sounded like a diesel, i wanted to replace the timing chain and gears also while i was in there. I went to my dodge dealer and asked for the tensioner that the t.s.b. calls for. he looked it up, it didn't show a tensioner for my '94 dak. anyway they didn't have it in stock. so i had to just use the chain and gears from auto zone. i wish i would have had time to order a double row chain and gears! oh well, next time. while you are at it you may want to replace your "by-pass" hose.
This job was actually easier that it is on the older engines....took me about 5 hours but my dak sounds MUCH better now...no more deisel sound!! i hope this helps, i wish i could give you info on the pro gear timing chain.

Message: I am also getting some timing chain noise in my '97 Dakota. But here is what is wierd, it seems to only make the noise at around 900 rpm. Lower, no noise, higher, no noise. It drives me nuts sometimes.
Should I get a new timing chain/ timing set, or am I fine. It was already replaced once while it was under warranty.

Message: Anybody used one of those OBDII monitors to look at the stats from the sensors on your Dak? I found this one that uses a Palm PDA and some software. It looks like a trick setup. You could use the data to keep track of the mods you do and if the your Dak is running ok. You can even reset codes!

Message: Dakota timing chain and gear (oem) are noisy. A dodge fix is to intall a tensioner with a double roller timing chain set. The tensioner adds weight, costs $50, and offers no improvement in performance. Causes additional friction forces. The tensioner's only job is to quiet stock chain and gear noise and take up slack on loose chains. Requires that you remove oil slinger on applicable applications to use the tensioner. I suggest you skip it and deal with a little rattle. Don't forget the gasket KIT. Gasket kit includes oil pan segments, front seal, water pump gasket, timing chain cover gasket, and a fuel pump gasket for engines with mechanical fuel pumps. See this thread:

Message: thanks for responding guys. So has anyone heard of the PRO GEAR TIMING CHAIN? I was just wondering, i think i will stick with dodge's timing chain setup, so that i could always take it back to them if i have a problem with the noise again. I can;t wait to get rid of that irritating noise.

Message: Check out the "Magnum V6 - Timing Chain TSB" (found on SpeedTweaks - Tips and Tricks webpage). I had the dealer install the tensioner in my 1992 3.9 as detailed in the TSB and BINGO! This is the first time my truck has not rattled! The fix was not under warrenty, so it cost me $$$, but IMHO, it was WELL WORTH IT!

Message: hey Dan, thanks for the reply, how much labor did it cost. I know the parts cost like $80, and i asked for an estimate and the dealership told me like $600. I think they're crazy for that much.
thanks

Message: Hey, Cal Dak.
It set me back about $380.00 at the Dodge dealership. I think the time charge is even on the TSB. Run a copy of it and give it to the service rep.
Not to slight the post from "C P", but it transformed my truck. Extra weight? Additional friction forces? I don't care. What I do know is that it has made that rattle since new, but now it purrs. Good luck!
Dan.
