Subject: 87 Dakota rattling noise(transmission?) IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
My 87 D with 100+k miles has developed this very loud rattle that sounds like it is comming from the torque converter area. When I rev the engine it smooths out and almost stops but at idle or in gear it really rattles.I checked for loose exhaust and other and found nothing.Sounds like a loose torque converter??? Also it is starting to shift like it has a shift kit in it. Any ideas ????? Please help this is my work truck and I really don't want to get taken by a tranny shop !

Message: check your cat.converter if it still has one.when it cool hit or shake the cat.with your hand,i have a 89 dak. and mine rattles more so when its cold.also theres a flapper on the right side in the exsh. manifold, where the exsh. pipe and manifold meet that will make a rattling .
if these things check out fine you might want to check your trans. fluid for color and strong smell,if it smells burn[strong odor] trans. problem.you can also pull the trans, and pull the torque converter check the hub on converter for cracks where it goes into the pump[they crack here sometimes because of age and stress]
hope this helps.
