Subject: 93 Dakota won't start! IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I just bought a 93 Dakota 4x4 with the 3.9 and auto. Within a day or so of buying it, it wouldn't start in park. I'd have to shift to neutral. When I say it won't start, I mean I get nothing when I turn the key to start. No noise, none of the guages dim, nothing. I replaced the neutral safety switch in the transmission, and now it won't start at all! I put the old switch back in, and it still won't start. Then I put the new switch in just to be sure, and it won't start. What else will cause this truck not to start? (Bad starter relay maybe?)
Thanks

Message: i take it that she wont crank.
check the battery connections, and the starter connections. you can swap relays around to get narrow the relay issue. give it a shot. if not check the wire from the solenoid to the relay.
if still nothing take a screw driver and cross out the solenoid on the starter to see if it will engage.

Message: You might wanna check to see if you a ....(cant think of the name) but some Dakotas have an aditional key/plug below the steering colum, w/out this it wont start. Its a for of anti theft.
It would look like a big fuse fits in it.
Good Luck Arapa

I'm going to vote for bad starter. Why? Because I just replaced mine two months ago for the same reason! Took the starter out and took it to a Starter/Alternator repair place and $25 later walked out with a "re-built" starter....new brushes and cleaned up at least. Works great ever since!

Message: i have the same problem with my '93 every so often- turn the key and no noise or anything. i replaced the starter a few months back due to an unrelated problem, and it still does it. but it seems to me like the shifter just doesn't go all the way into park, so i give it a good wack up and it'll start just fine. i'm sure there's a way to actually fix it, but i'm just too damn lazy and this works fine for now. freaked me out the first time it did it though, which was the day after i bought it.

Message: Hmmmmmm......I notice a pattern here. We all have the Gen II. Thinking back, I do remember I would get a slight "click" with mine that led me to a starter problem. If you get NOTHING then I guess I'm wrong! Can I change my vote to the "gotta be in park or neutral" switch? Taking off the battery terminals and cleaning them very well, with sandpaper or a wire brush is cheap and wouldn't hurt to try. I've seen it happen on a friends Ford Aerostar! (What a POS that is!)

Message: I have a 91 V8 and mine has been doing the same thing. I put a new starter in last year, but I would say one out of 4 times I go to start it I get nothing. The battery is newer as well. It only does this in the summer. All winter long no problems.

Message: I also have a 93 dodge dakota 3.9L and the same thing happens to me but very seldomly. I will go to turn the key and it does nothin..wont crank or anything..no noise. But then i will go back the same day and try to start it and it will fire right up. I think it may have to do with faulty wiring or somethin it seems like to me. I dunno?

Message: Ok. I finally notice a pattern. If it is a hot day and the truck is in the sun for a while, it wont start. If I open the hood for about five minutes, it starts. If its parked in the shade, no problem. I usually dont get the problem if I start it again within five minutes of shutting it down, but it never does this in the winter, and in July August it does it 4 times a day. Its driving me crazy as I cannot even let my wife drive it in the summer because I know it wont start. Next week I will take it into the shop and I post the result.

Message: I just noticed this past month that my '93 dak has issues starting in the heat also. I have to hold the key longer to get it to turn on. I mean, it turns over and all...all the noise and what not, but it just takes longer for it to actually start.
I thought it was my spark plugs that i just changed a little while ago....

Message: Last night was the warmest night of the year here in West Michigan...it took the solenoid hours to cool down, but if I open up the hood for a few minutes, it helps. Anyway, today is a much cooler day with rain and suprise - no problems whatsoever. I did some reading and other vehicles have the same issue. The solenoid gets hot and wont pass enough power to the starter. I talked to my mechanic about it and we are going to see if this can be fixed..the starter is only two years old. I need to schedule my appointment on a hot day to get the problem to duplicate. Hopefully the contacts are just warn.

Message: I have a 1992 Dakota automatic, that I bought from a local dealer. The next day it wouldn't start. The dealer came to my home bumped the shifter further into park and it worked. I've been doing that for a year now, or putting it into neutral to start it. Tired of doing this, I came to this website for some insight on how to remedy the problem. Interesting that so many others of you have had the same problem. Any sure fixes out there???

Message: Follow-up
Well, after a year of bumping the shifter into park it seemed like we had to start shaking it alittle and then putting it into Neutral and back and then finally over the last few weeks it seemed as if only voodoo would make it start. Seriously though it was getting to the point that we didn't want to shut it off and took 5 minutes or so to get it to turn over. We read all of the advice on the problem here and decided to bite the bullet and buy a new starter. We bought the one at Autozone for $77 plus $55 core charge. This evening I spent about 2 hours putting it in. We can't believe it!!! It not only starts but turns over quickly AND EVERY TIME!!!! We are back in business. I guess I shouldn't be so doggone cheap. Thanks for all the help.

Message: i have a 94 dakota and i had a problem with it not starting. Any gear ..no start. i bypassed the selanoid and got it running and took it to the shop. The guy finally figured out the problem.. there was an anti-theft device under the instrument panel by the name of "Prolock". Seems that this device stopped working. He removed it and bypassed the device.
No problems!
