Subject: Can anyone help me? IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I'm the proud owner of a new red 2002 Dakota SXT with the v6. Someone told me that I could get more power if I removed the fan and put a 180 degree thermostat in. Can anyone tell me where I can find some easy procedures to do these??? Thanks for all your help guys!

Message: Cindy A -- yes you can get some more power, You didn't mention it but i am assuming that when you said remove the fan you were going to replace it with an electric one right?

Message: see the post: t-stat for info on the 180 if you want it. To do it just unbolt upper rad hose at the top of the engine and there it is, put in new with new gasket and rebolt.

Message: Do yourself a favor, do not trust anything a person tries to advise you when they make suggestions like "removing the fan". Sounds like this person is very engine ignorant or doesnt like you very much.
Yes you can do a different fan but not remove it all together unless you want to buy a new engine in short order.

Message: I wasn't planning on putting another fan in there because there already is an electric fan installed. It came stock. I don't know why there are two fans in my truck. Getting rid of the mechanical one doesn't sound like a bad idea if I still have the electric one and a colder thermostat? I guess I will have to be careful with what I'm told because I don't really know much about mechanics and I don't want to ruin my truck. Thanks for your help!

Message: Cindy A,
The 180 t stat fools the computer into thinking that the engine is cold. The computer richens the mixture or, adds more gas, to help the cold engine run better. Engines run better with more gas when they are cold, but as the engine gets up to temp(195 dgrees stock) the computer leans the mixture for better performance and better gas mileage.
I tried the 180 t stat and got a little better performance but worst gas mileage. 24 to 21 mpg.
The best thing that I found was a K&N dropin air filter, new brass cap and rotor, and NGK F5 spark plugs.Check the plug number, it may be F4.
8.8 plug wires and a less restrictive muffler would be next.
You need a mechanical fan.
