Message: I bought my '96 2wd truck used. I was looking in the fuse "box" under the hood today. I noticed that the ABS relay was missing, and so was the ABS 40 amp fuse. The truck, of course has ABS, and the ABS light comes on every time I start the truck, then goes out like it's supposed to.
My question is, What is the relay for? I was told it is for the warning light on the dash. That dosen't make sense to me because the light works.
What does a relay, and fuse cost? And what are the chances that they are missing because something is wrong with the system, and the former owner was tired of the light being on.
Thans for any info.

Message: Find a wet road or some snow. Slam the brakes and you'll know soon enough if your ABS is working.

Message: 96dak,
Did you ever figure out what the deal with the removed relays? I just bought a 94 2wd dakota that has the exact samething. I've seen where the dakota was offered with 2wd and 4wd ABS. I'm hoping the two relays that are removed are for 4wd ABS, and that I have 2wd ABS. Please let me know what you found out.

Message: Most Dakotas were sold with only rear wheel anti-lock brakes. 4-wheel anti-lock has been available for a while, but only as a requested option in most cases.

Message: I don't think 4 wheel ABS wasn't offered until 2000+ vehicles. I do know the 2 wheel ABS system has had a lot of modifying from 97 to 99. If you look at the manual it's different electrically every year from 97 to 99. Which says something wasn't working right before.
Wouldn't want any other!

Message: A roll of the dice would say to replace the rear axle speed sensor. I do not know what the code is for, but most likely the speed sensor has failed. BUT, parts hangers sometimes cost more money than real diagnostics. It might pay in the long run to have it properly diagnosed.

Message: My 99 Dodge Dakota,
2wd, ext cab, v6, 3.9, auto transm, has the "ABS" and "Brake" lights stay
on and the speedometer not working properly. This all started at once. A
mechanic ran codes for me for free, thankfully! The code said "ROM 72" and I saw a 7717 number there also, but he didn't have time to find out what the solution was and he did it for free so I didn't want to be to picky! The speedometer will go up to about 30 -40 mph only when I get up to about 3 thousand RPM's, but it won't work properly. I have bought an "SC-36" speed sensor that goes in in the back left side of the transmission but don't want to just throw parts at it until I find out exactly whats wrong with it? I don't have an arm and leg to pay either I would appreciate any of your knowledge. Thanks and God
Bless.

Message: I feel cocky so I will clear this all up now, hehe.
Put the fuse back in and buy a relay... does not cost too much...
Then after that make sure your rear brakes are adjusted perfect and bleed the WHOLE system...
If something on the ABS like a sensor is broke the system will go into fail-safe and not function... It will be normal braking at this point.
I would say that after you put the relay and fuse in that the ABS light will come on and the system will go into fails safe mode... It will be just like it was... If this is so you need to take it into a shop and have the sensor replaced... I think it’s a pressure sensor that mounts on the inside of the frame and has some wires that run to it. It will be on the driver’s side about one foot in front of the axel.
What does the relay do? The sensor talks to the relay and allow your rear brakes to pulse... Pretty much the way it works is that pressure regulator thing allows an even amount of pressure to both the brake drums at the same time. This is why you need the brakes adjusted perfect. This also allows your truck to NOT slide sideways!
As your wheels change friction on the drums during stopping this will also change pressure. If the pressure stays the same for too long the relay starts to pulse and stops the lockup.
Some of the trucks also have an axel speed sensor that works with the pressure regulator. Your code is either for that or the regulator. While you’re into this project you just as well replace both.
The ABS system on a Dakota works a lot like the Colt, stealth, and Vista model Dodges.
I am guessing that the moron that had the truck before you pulled the relay and fuse so that the light would not stay on rather than fix the problem.

Yes, the person that did your brake work should check all this out.
