Subject: Two Cat converters?? IP: Logged
Message: Hello all, I am new to this site so don't get mad if I do something wrong. I have a 1996 dodge dakota sport club cab with the 3.9 V6 auto. Now my question is, I installed a Dynomax cat back exhaust and for some reason I have two cats in the pipe. The second one slightly smaller then the first. is there any reason for this? or is it safe to take it out? please help.

Message: I am new to this board also, and I have a 1997 Dakota 4x4 that runs terrible. I live in Florida and we have no emission controls here either. My questions are....can the cat converters be removed without any damage to the engine? If yes, how many should mine have?

Message: I'm pretty sure that Dak's have only one catalytic converter. What you are looking at is probably closer towards the front of the truck. Those are actually resonators. There are two of them (one each side) and yes they can be taken out. In fact, if you want a better sound from your truck, I recommend having a muffler shop take them out and replace them with straight pipe.

Message: A Muffler shop, or any shop that is state certified can not alter or remove the cat converter legally in any state. I have checked up on that.

Message: Turn the key to the on postion and turn it back off, repeat two more times and then watch the engine light, it should start to flash. count the numbers and then enter them on that site above. Auto Zone can tell you more about how this works.
