Subject: 89 dakota dies IP: Logged
Message: Any ideas why i drive along and it dies, wait 5 minutes starts right up. Earlier morning starts fine, after setting at work all day it is hard to get to start. Does not seem to be temperature related due to the random timing of it dieing. Thanks for any ideas.

Message: It sounds like your ignition. How old is your coil? When it dies, are you doing an onboard diagnostic check to see what the computer codes reveal?

Message: I'd be willing to bet it's the hall effect sensor wire from the distributor. Easy to change, about $30 for the part at NAPA. They go out quite commonly. Mine has done it twice. When they go out, it causes an intermittent problem just like you describe. The first one took me six months to figure out what the hell was going on.

Message: Hey got the same truck but 87, i kinda had that prob...does it sputter before dying like its not getting enough gas. Mine did that a bit and i did a couple of things. Replaced fuel filter, rebuilt carb --- that might be the prob
just giving you someplace to start

Message: If it turns over and won't start right after it dies try this trick for diagnoses. While you crank the engine, bang on the bottom of the gas tank with a rubber mallet. If you're stuck someplace you can kick the bottom yourself if you are limber and careful. If it starts right up when you bang on the tank, take a look at the fuel pump. Another tip. If you're handy with metal work you could cut an access port in the bed and save yourself some crawling around. Worked for my '92 and it runs great again.
Good Luck

Message: I also have a 89 Dakota and a similar thing happens. While I am driving around town, the truck loses power and RPMS. It stalls out completely, and then dies (without sputtering). When I pull along side of the road, it starts up immediately and I can drive away without further problems. The problems happens irregularly and intermittently. I also do not get any computer code errors regarding this event. Do you think that it could be the hall sensor or fuel tank related (i.e. blocked screen, fuel pump). Thanks in advance for all your help.
