Subject: Autolite 3923 Platinum?
IP: Logged

Message:
I bought the AP3923 plugs for my 2003 3.9 today. Did I get the wrong plugs? I installed them and noticed better response. I was a little worried though in that I keep hearing 3923s but does it matter if you get copper, platinum, etc? If I got the wrong ones, please let me know and I will get the correct ones.

Thanks!

Does anyone have any advice? Should I pick up the copper ones instead of the platinum?

Sorry to tell you but the copper 3923s are the ones you should have gotten.
The copper dissipates heat alot better.
The 3923s are one heat range colder than the 3924s and apparently run better in the Magnum engines.

Billy Bob, does that apply to platinum 3923's also? I was wondering 'cause I also work at a parts store & used my discount for a set for my '00 3.9L. I've got a lead foot, & didn't want to worry about gap erosion & stuff for a while. Did getting them in platinum wipe out the benefit of getting 3923's in the first place? Say it ain't so...I mean, I bought a Helix t.b. spacer and a drop-in K&N before finding this board, where I found out the Helix is useless and that the 5.2 FIPK works w/the 3.9. So, if I have to kick myself any more, I'll need an ass transplant.

I read up on what the best plugs for the 3.9 Magnums were a few months back when I swapped mine out.
The Autolite 3923 is what I went with because they were the best overall plugs for our engines.
Copper pulls the heat way from the tip better than platinum are therefore are less prone to detonation.
So when people recommend the Autolite 3923s, they are referring to copper. I have read that some guys have noticed a decrease in performance with platinum plugs. The copper ones are only about a buck a plug too.
Just make sure you gap to .040.
So bend over and ..................just kidding.

Billy Bob: good to know...well, at least I can return the plugs since I haven't installed 'em yet. I was checking if we had a spare set of 6 in copper at work today, and found a problem. Turns out that although 3923's are only a bit "colder" than 3924's (making 'em a good upgrade), 3924 is the stock plug for the older (non-Magnum?) 3.9's. Stock Autolites for late model 3.9's (mine's a 2000) are 5224's.
As I understand it (I could be wrong, please tell me if I am), with most plugs, the higher the part #, the "hotter" the plug (except NGK's, where it's the opposite). So, um, would moving from my stock plugs to the (apparently) much-colder 3924's create a problem, assuming they even fit late-model 3.9's? Or would I be better off switching to the next colder # from 5224's? Thanks in advance.

Compliments of Speed Tweaks

Spark Plug Recommendations:

While the factory and factory replacement spark plugs work, the Magnum engines have shown slightly better performance with the Autolite 3923 Spark Plugs. The Autolite 3923's are a standard tip spark plug that is one heat range colder than stock, as compared to the extended "Special Power Tip" plugs that the engine came with. Why the difference? A standard tip plug is less susceptible to detonation, is a good replacement for modified Magnum engines, and work very well with modified engines as well...especially when using Nitrous or a Supercharger. In some cases, the Autolite 3923's also showed a 4-5HP difference at the rear wheels on the Dyno. (The test was performed with new OEM Spark plugs vs. the Autolite 3923's. No changes to the engine and the plugs were tested on the same day under the same conditions.)
-------------------------------------------------
I'm not sure of the difference between the 5 series vs. 3 series plug. It may be something simple as the length of the ceramic or something. If you have access to both, try eyeballing them to see if there is a size difference. Although I would say the 23 part of each would indicate that they are the same heat range.
I have a 2002 and put in the 3923s at about 500 miles from new so I could compare them to the stock plugs new. I now find it idles smoother and is a little more responsive.
I have never read anyone recommend the 5 series plug and even Speedtweaks suggests the 3923.
Hope that make sense.

Cool - if they worked well in your '02, there's no reason they wouldn't work in my '00; the 3.9's from I think '97 (when they switched to Magnum?) up to the new '03s are identical. I did notice the idle to be kinda rough, so a smoothed-idle would be nice. I'm assuming copper plugs are OE...my owner's manual says to change plugs every 30k; if the stockers were platinum, wouldn't it be a much longer interval? Thanks again; you "saved my ass".

Dodge started using the "Magnum" term about 10 years ago and tweaked the engines a bit through each incarnation up to our GenIII Daks.
The OE Champions have a "special power tip" that I assume is platinum. Sticking to the manual's recommendation for changing the 3923s would be the same unless your are running a heavily modded engine the wears them alot quicker. Even so, they are pretty inexpensive and it's a fairly easy job to swap them out whenever you like or you feel it needs it.
You may not need that transplant after all....lol.
