 Subject: Which Wire?

Hey ya'll, i have a 98 Dodge dakota V-6 and i putting a new set of auto meter guages in my truck, but iam having trouble with the Water Temp Guage, iam conecting it to the sensor next to the themastat, but i have a problem because there is two wires comming out of the sensor, there is a black one w/ a white stripe and there is a Tan one with a black stripe.Which one do i need to conect the auto meter guage wire too? I really need some help, thanx in adavance.

I think you are connecting the wire to the wrong sensor. It sounds like you are connecting it to the temp sending unit. The temp sensor has only one wire to it. It is located on the oposite side of the thermostat housing. Do the directions say to connect it to the sensor or sending unit?

Like Simpleman says you better not cut or splice any sensor wires or your will trip the MIL and set codes in your puter..........

You may want to read or re-read the info under "Tech Tips" at their website. I'll try to provide the link & section concerning the "temp. sender" not "sensor". They suggest you install another 'temp. sender" besides the stock unit, and it should be in the block, not on a tee. See below.......................
The main reason is every vehicle on the road today has different locations for the pressure and coolant temp sensors, not to mention thread sizes. Using oil pressure as an example, it is recommended that a tee fitting be used so you can add the new Auto Meter sender while retaining the OE sender. In order to get everything connected properly, a trip to your local plumbing store may be needed, or, you may need an additional metric adapter, especially for late model vehicles and imports.

For the electric water temp gauges, the temp sender should be located either in the intake manifold or the cylinder head; this is not an instance where a tee fitting can be used. The reason being that the coolant will not displace and completely submerge the sender, causing inaccurate readings. Again, a trip to your local plumbing store may be needed in case we do not offer the correct adapter for your application.

My manual (96 Dakota) shows a "tan" wire(hot) and a "black"( ground) wire on the Sensor, not the Sender.......so I think you are looking at the wrong device. You want the "SENDER" unit. I would put in another sender unit, if I was doing it...............IMHO........

I installed a seperate sending unit on the block just below where the coil is mounted. There is a plug you take out and screw in the new unit.

simpleman96, so i should use the stuff auto meter sent me and take the plug out of the block and screw in the sender unit. This plug you are talking about, it is located below the coil you say, what exactaly should it look like, so i can more easily find it, thanx again. sorry i sound so dumb, but i really am just out of it right now.

Yes! Use the sending unit they gave you. The plug is located taward the bottom of the block below the coil. With your engine COLD, and OFF, remove the plug. You will see the antifreeze come out. You will loose some in the process. Quickly put the new sending unit in and tighten. If no coolant comes out of the plug hole then you may have an oil gallery plug, and not the coolant. Try another plug. I don't think there are any oil plugs in that area anyway. Let me know how it goes.

Thanx so much Simpleman96, i was about to go crazy trying to find that damn thing, i will be sure to look today as soon as i get home from school, i will let ya know how it turns out, i also have a Air/Fule ratio guage that iam going to hook up, i know its the orange wire w/ a tan stripe, i learned that from Speed Tweeks, not unless you have some other way to hook it up, i thought about hooking it up under the truck, but not sure what wire it is, there is like 4 wires comming out of each O2 sensor. Thanx a million, Simpleman96. Dose your name come from that Bad @ss song from Linard Skinard? Linard Skinard Kicks @ss!!! Thanx again!
