Subject: Limited Slip or broken? IP: Logged
Message: Hi there-
I'm in Indy, and of course, with the 10" of snow we received, my tuck was stuck in my driveway (which is dirt). I noticed that when I tried to rock my truck out (2WD) only the passenger tire was spinning, not the driver side...not one bit. Is this something that I should be worried about? Could it be that I screwed something up in the axle? The truck is still stuck - will have to get the truck yanked out I'm sure...any advice is appreciated!
Thanks!
Mark

Message: You have an open rear end. If it was Sure Grip both wheels would turn. In an open rear end the wheel without traction turns and the wheel with traction doesn't.

Thanks!

Message: Just get a Sure Grip installed. I traded my 97 4x4 for my 2001 4x2 and I don't miss it. I have the same problem with snow. I got a foot of it Saturday night. 4x4's get stuck too, I'd say more because the drivers tend to be a little more brave thinking they can get out of anything and it's just not true.

Message: Where I'm at right now (Northeast TX) there's about 3 inches of sleet collected outside right now.
Sleet isn't like snow, it looks like snow when you see it collected on the ground, but it's very hard and more slick than snow. You can stand on it and your feet won't sink into it like snow.
I went outside just now and stood next to my truck and I was about an extra 3" taller next to my truck... Kinda gave me an idea how it'll look lowered.:)

Message: Is it true that just because you have a 4x4, doesn't mean that eithr on is a LSD?
If not, then my LSD has the same # of wheels with power to them as a 4x4. Just not front and rear!

Message: on my 4X4 with LSD - all four wheels pull
the two front are direct drive
the rear are LSD so they both push
Check inside your glove box to see if you LSD or spin tires and count the skid marks

Message: OK - so if I wanted to get a LSD installed on my truck - what would be a decent ballpark range to pay for something like this? Is this something that is done by specialized mechanics, or can just about any knowedgable mechanic install it?
Thanks!

Message: Sure grip is the name of Chryslers in house LSD design. I think theyre made by Eaton but don't quote me on that.

Call a dealer near you for pricing. Check around for installation. There's really not too much involved with installing a new carrier if you are reusing the ring gear. The pinion depth is already set you just need to reset the bearing preload and the backlash and that's really simple.
You could also go aftermarket with an Auburn Gear or you could go with a locker style which is simple to install and usually doesn't need the carrier removed. There's a few companies that make them for our trucks.
