Message:
I just bought a 1987 dodge dakota 3.9 v6..
AS IS !!
So i drive off the lot get 15 min. away and it starts bogging out then it drives along for a while but i can't get it to go above 45mph.
And when i did try it staled i waited like five min and it started . I drove another 20min and it did the same thing . Started it again and drove it home . Someone told me it could be the cam or crank sensor.... or the fuel pump any help would be appreciated . oh yeah it was raining too..and i only paid $400 for the truck !!!
Oh yeah once it did start for like the first 20 30 min of driving i was doing like 65 70 mph ! then it started..

Could be a lot of things... sounds to me like it might be starved for gas. It's possible that your fuel pump is going bad, sometimes it's got the proper pressure, sometime it doesn't...

Although it's hard to say. Being an '87, without knowing it's previous maintaince history... it really could be anything. How many miles are on it? I'd honestly say you need to take it somewhere and have it looked at... I'm surprised you didn't have a mechanic check it out before purchase. That should be a must on as-is vehicles that are that old.

Usually if a cam or crank sensor is bad the engine won't start or run at all. I'm wondering if it could be an EGR problem?

a 87 don,t have a crank or cam sensor......period.......there carb. the computer meters the fuel thur the electric metering rods in the carb.check the fuel filter, rubber hoses on gas tank, fuel pump,[its under the alternator]next it stops remove the air breather from the carb. and look down the carb. throat and move the excelarator cable back and forth to see if its pumping gas. if it is then its not fuel, its ignition.
