Message: Interesting cuz my 2000 dak stalled a month ago. I had the tires in full lock to the right and it stalled. first time ever and made me think of why. I didn't bother taking it to the shop cuz i've seen posts here of others doing that and always get the same response "nothing's wrong". We take our trucks to the shop that specializes in them and they cannot tell us what's wrong with it. Sounds corny huh?

Message: Full lock to the right can cause a stall at idle, since your putting a heavy load on the power steering system, which in turns drags on the motor.
00dak,
Have you checked your plugs, distributor cap, and distributor rotor? I'd also look into running some fuel injector cleaner through it. What is your idle RPM at?

Message: My 99 Dakota Sport 4x4 3.9L V6 used to stall when shifting Reverse to Drive quick, but only happened when I had just got it used, had 37,071 miles got it Dec. 23 2002. She now currently has 40,621 miles, she still runs just like the first day I drove her. My idle speed runs at 850 when cold and about 700 when warm, maybe try adjusting idle speed, I'm no mechanic!!

Message: I have a 1997 Dakota and been having the same problem. I only have 60,000 miles on it, and it sometimes stall after starting and from shifting from park to reverse or drive. Does anyone know why?

Message: I've never drove or owned a car or truck that stalled when turning the wheel all the way in one direction unless something was wrong with it. Dodge is too cheap to put a power steering pressure switch on the dakotas except on the 4 cylinder, which needs it even more.

Message: Actually, I should have clarified, I think it's only the 4x4 that'll stall at full lock...
Mine's never stalled. Well, there was that time I tried to do a fourth gear start-from-stop... hey, I thought it was second! It was 4 in the AM... geez...
To anyone who's stalling I'd really suggest checking your cap/rotor, the stock ones seem to burn out in 20,000 miles or so. I mean, they get -real- pitted and worn.

Message: 500 to 1000 RPM? Isnt that somewhat low? I usually Idle around 1000 to 1.5. Of course, ive done some mods that could increase the idle a bit.

Message: try checking the electric speed sensor and wire on the trans.this tells the computer to idle up the motor, when coming to a stop or putting it in gear.

Message: try checking your cam sensor pick ups in the bottom of the distributor cap. i had a 97 that would stall and then be fine just a few mins later. upon inspecting it found that the pick up plate was loose and two of the plates were missing. ran fine most of the time then just when it wanted to it would stall. this plat is in the bottom of the dist under the cam sensor and shoud be solid and have 3 metal plates pointing upward around the edge of it

Message: My '97(3.9) was stalling when I shifted in and out of park. It was like someone flipped an off switch somewhere. I cleaned the pintle of the Idle air control valve a few months ago. It acted alot better until now. It started stalling more frequently again. I just replaced it with a new one ($49 at Advance Auto Parts) So far so good. No more stalling

Message: I had the same stalling issue for the last few months. After 4 mechanics, 2 Idle Air Controls, 1 set of plugs, and many hours of choice words; one dealer mechanic told me and fixed the problem with a new EGR valve. No problems since.
