Subject: Rattling noise... IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys...
I get this rattling noise at around 30mph and up.
From doing some research, I've determined it's either the timing chain or crankcase bearings...
Another problem I've discovered, the oil guage dips under the mid-mark on the guage on idle and then over it when in motion... It didn't always do that, it used to stay in the middle on idle and go up a little bit less than it does now when in motion. It used to perform better too, it's gotten slightly slower since.
It is time for a sparkplug change and an injector cleaning as well. I pulled one of the sparkplugs the other day, and it had some carbon build-up on it and the electrodes looked slightly burned.
Other than that, it's running great for a '99 with a little over 50,000 on the odo...:) Especially taking into account the way I drive this sucker.

Message: Oil pressure doesn't look too bad. Try to check the idler pulley or the ac compressor, but it does sound more like a timing chain. Good luck.

Message: I get this rattling noise at around 30 mph and up also. It sounds like it is winding up to take off? I was told it was spark knocking that the size of the engine it to small for the power it has. That is what they told me when I took it in to find out what it was. They told me it was nothing to worry about.

Message: Long term, 'spark knock' or pre-ignition, or pinging, as it's called, CAN damage valves and rings. Generally, the ignition timing is too advanced, or the car runs too hot, or is lugging (too high a gear for the vehicle speed). It can and should be addressed.

Message: I would check out the plenum gasket. When it develop es a leak it will cause pinging and increased oil consumption.

Message: Change those plugs and clean injectors ..
On your truck ignition is NOT advanced enough
to cause any " pinging "
The carbon buildup is doing it.
Then , next thing to think about
is 180 therm
cooler air to intake !!!

Message: Yall need to seriously over dose some fuel and combustion chamber cleaners... I always put in 3 cans of tech-ron along with 3 cans of slick 50's high mileage fuel system cleaner... ALL of this in one tank and run till nearly empty... When I pulled my heads, "for the port and polish", even after doing all of this, they still had some minor carbon deposits... Never caused it to burn oil or anything either if your thinking about that issue... It's good to keep the combustion chambers and fuel system as clean as you can on these things...
You'll be surprised just how much better one will run after good cleaning...
