Subject: My truck is running like crap! IP: Logged
Message: I have already changed the cap, rotor & plug wires.
This is what its doing:
1.
When I try to start the truck after it has sat a while it runs like it is running out of gas or only firing on one cyllinder. This lasts for about 5 seconds, then it dies. When I try to start it again it cranks right up.
2.
When idling, the engine misses a little. It will also start to lope like it does when I first try to start it. It only does this randomly.
3.
While driving, if I stomp on the gas it bogs down, and sputters like it isn't getting a good air fuel mix.
I've also noticed that since this started happening, my bake pedal has been harder to push while the engine is not running. I don't know if this has anything to do with the pother problems.
I looked through my Haynes manual, and in the troubleshooting section it lists vaccum leaks & fuel pump under almost every symptom. Could this just be a vaccum leak or bad EGR valve?
Sorry about the book. Thanks

Message: what year is the truck?92 up have a pan under the intake that leaks and can suck oil from the motor.buy a vac.gauge for $10-15 and check your vac.it should be a steady 14-19 when idling.also you can remove one plug wire at a time and put it back on to see if the motor slows.if it doze your plug is firing,go through each one at a time.you mite have water in the gas, dirty injecters, carb., etc.when it was running fair did it loss a lot of power in the hills?could be plugged fuel filter.hope this helps!

Message: Don't remove a plug wire. You could fry the computer. Ok for non computer engines, not with computer. Remove the IAS sensor on the back of the throttle body and clean the hole it came out of real good. See if you can pull any codes from the computer. Recheck the plug wires to be sure they go to the right plug. Pull the distributor cap and just check to see if everything is ok. When you check the IAS sensor, look down the throttle body. Open the throttle, if you see a lot of oil in the bottom of the pan, the plenum gasket has gone south on you. It sounds like you may have multiple problems. Try the above and get back with us. Good luck

Message: Hey I had a similar problem. Take the cap and rotor off and look at the pick-up. The mount is plastic and rivoted in place. Mine had somehow gotten slotted out and would slop around while the engine was running, causing the engine to cut-out. It progressivly got worse. Check it out

Message: I am assuming that you have a 3.9/5.2, if so check to c if you are leaking oil around the distributor. If you do there's a pretty good chance the rod is bent and that is causing your problem. If that is the case you change the distributor and your problem is solved.
