Subject: Decals IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 dakota and am thinking about removing the factory decals, does anyone know if they are under the clearcoat? If not, has anyone tried removing them and have any info to share about the experience? I imagine the paint underneath will be a different shade of black.

Message: The decals are added after the truck is completely painted. The paint will most likely be as new as the truck was back in 97... Leaving a ghost effect of the decal (especially on a dark vehicle-- black).
You might get lucking and be able to use a rubbing compound to feather it out---
Use a hairdryer/heatgun to remove the decals... Heat the area you are looking to remove-- then let it set for a minute, then heat it again--- doing this will release the glue-- and then you can work the decal off (and most of the glue at the same time). WD-40 works well to clean off the residual adhesive.

Message: rtdkota is correct just heat and remove. but do not use WD-40 this could rely mess up the paint. I used a product called "XENIT" that i purchased from a local auto parts store. It is a citrus based cleaner and remover it worked great when I removed the decals from my 01 quadcab and didnit mess the paint up at all.
