Subject: 3.9 looses power IP: Logged
Message: i got a 96 dakota 3.9 v6 and i,ve been putting parts in it left and right have not solved the problem, well my problem is that it will idle ok sometimes and rough others. but my may concern is when i start driving it it will start loosing power not letting it get gas at 3000rpms and the check engine light starts blinking, and motor just cuts out. but soon has u let off throttle it will go back to normal then start over again it will not let it have fuel has soon has the engine light starts blinking, so if any one knows i,ll appreciate it

Message: If the CEL is blinking it means the engine is misfiring on multiple cylinders. It's probably getting plenty of gas, just no spark. Does it only happen when the gas pedal is in a certain position? If so then it could be a dead spot on the TPS sensor. Otherwise i would say its something in the ignition system, maybe a bad coil or something in the distributer.

Message: A plugged catalytic converter may cause the problem as well.
Most exhaust shops can test it. Make sure they show you the test. A pressure test is common where the test the pressure before and after the cat. Lots of pressure before and non after is a bad sign. They usually drill small holes for this. The other is with a infrared temp sensor that they read the temp of the cat. A good cat will get plenty warm and a bad one will not.

Message: Lance:
I may be totally off base on this one but I had a similiar problem on a ford. Turned out to be the throttle positon sensor.
Didn't need to replace it just unscrewed it and turn it slightly and then tighten it back down.
At least you can try it and it won't cost you anything.
Cheers,
Stuffy

Message: I dont know who Vern is, but it doesn't sound like he was being a dick. When posting advise on this site you sometimes have to be somewhat blunt. You never know when people will take things wrong so the best way is to just say it and nothing more.

Message: Simpleman96,
I agree. Sometimes when we write things, they can be interpreted wrong. I find this site very helpful and most people go out of their way to help.
But..........I find several things annoying:
1. Buy the manual.......how can you possibly work on your truck without a manual??
2. Posting....... edit your posts before you finally post. Nobody wants to read a post 5 times before they try to understand what you are saying; namely write short sentences, and use periods. We all make spelling mistakes, but we can't understand what you are saying if you run sentences together.
3. Search.......use the 'search mode' to be better informed.
***** the message board is only as good as the people using it.
John.......
