Message: I would go with the V8, I had an 01cc Dak with the V6, dont get me wrong it was nice and got me where i wanted to go, but for the price diffrence its really hard to pass up the V8, the 4.7 is one hell of an engine, you cant go wrong. I also get better MPG in my V8 than i did in my V6 (figure that one out) the power diffrence is like night and day. Test drive an 8. Trust me dont make the same mistake i made.

Message: I have a 3.7 QC 4WD 5sp 3.90 gears. Power is good, milage is good.
I bought the V6 because it fit my budget and economy was a concern. This thing runs good but I would want the added power of the V8 if I were towing much.
The previous 3.9 V6 has no where near the performance of the 3.7.

Is this engine that you have for sale? If so, how much are you asking?

Message: 20 miles per gallon isn't much better? what v8 are these people driving? I have a 97 5.2 v8 club cab with auto and 3.9 lsd gearing. Also have 32 inch tires (3 inch lift, very nice mod...)
Anyhow, before lift I got around 12 mpg and now I get around 11 (according to computer and my gas pump estimates.) Someone explain this to me. I thought the bigger tires would bring it closer to the 3.55 that everyone else has and I would get this mythical "good" gas mileage of 15 or so.
However, I love this truck. I test drove 4 v6 models, even one with 180k on it and one with 45k on it. these were both (as well as the other 2,)about as slow as my old toyota(with mods...) My v8 has some serious getup, and is much more fun to drive. This is with the auto though. That's my input.

Message: Mat,
You lost 1mpg because your engine is working harder to turn the larger tire, moving your powerband into a less efficient range. While the 3.9 rear seems kinda steep, with the tire diameter and OD gear ratio it really isn't. Is it easier to peddle a 12 speed bike in 12th gear or 6th? Is it easier to start from a standstill in 6th or 12th? Your peddling less (revolutions)in 12th but you are working harder. You probaly would have gained mileage if installing the larger rear tire on a 4.11 or numerically higher ratio. The combination on modern modern vehicles are designed for max mpg at a given speed. This would include engine peak efficiency, trans od ratio, and tire diameter. Maybe J&J can tell you how to increase the rpm shift points to help. By the way, try cruising faster, it may help if the wind resistance doesn't offset it.
By the way, you did ask for an explanation didn't you? Man, its snowing like crazy here, go out and enjoy that ride if your in the Northeast!

Message: Mat,
You have the 3.9 gear because it was ordered like that. Could be trailer/hd option.
Larry at J&J Auto is the person who ownes a shop and is very active on this board and is very knowledgeable.
About your mileage issue; I would go over to the V8 board and post your message and do a search there. This is the V6 board. What everyone is going to suggest first (including me) is to change your 02 sensor. Other easy mods include 5w-30 synthetic oil, platnium spark plugs gapped about .005 larger,a K&N air filter, and lose weight in your right foot. I agree that 11mpg is on the low side. Most friends that have a 5.2 Ram 1500 4x4 get about 15 average. Your truck being lighter with less frontal area should do better.
Good Luck.

Message: thanks robert, I'll give it a try over there, although from what I have read it is just a bunch of egos saying buy a honda if you want mileage (no offense to them, but that's not a very intellegent answer.) My truck SHOULD get better mileage, and it's not just my foot. On the freeway, goin 60, steady, I'm lookin 13, MAYBE 14 if I'm lucky. Where's the 17's? Anyhow, thanks again.
