Subject: 93 Dakota fuel pump IP: Logged
Message: My fuel pump seems to cut out when the tank level empties to about 1/2 tank. I fill the tank and everything is fine until it empties to 1/2 again. This is consistent. I'm assuming it's the fuel pump. Before I buy another pump and pull the box off the truck, can anyone confirm or shed a little light on this scenario. I'm afraid of replacing the fuel pump to find out later that it was some sensor somewhere. I'd appreciate any comments.

Message: The fuel sender is screwed up (separate problem)but I am certain the tank is 1/2 full. I have the 22 gal. tank and all I have to put in to fill it is 10 gallons. As far as the sender; it works from 1/2 to full - I know when to refill by the mileage on the trip odometer. I have not run out of gas yet... (knock on wood.)

Message: Im assuming your "pulling the box off" means the bed? If so you dont need to pull the bed to work on the fuel pump/ sender assmbly. Just run your tank down as much as possible and you can run it out by disconecting the fuel line, running a line to a external tank and switching your dak on to run, that is a tricky way of doing it so if you do make sure to have another person there to help you.
With your tank empty or most the way its easy to drop it from underneath no problem, just a bit easier than pulling a bed.

Message: I have a 92 with a similar problem that just started this weekend. The first Symptom I noticed was the gas gauge fluctuating all over the place, the second symptom was on the freeway with between 1/4 and 1/2 a tank when I would floor it to pass the power would drop off significantly and the speed would drop dramatically until I let up on the gas then I could baby it back up to speed. When I got off the freeway it still would peter out at anything over half throttle. I filled it up and the problem went away but sitting still I noticed that I was getting a very loud sound from the fuel pump and the gauge was still fluctuating wildly. Any advice would be appreciated.

Message: My 95 dakota has the same power loss/ hesitation when my tank is close to empty. I'm going to remove the tank to see if there is any sludge in there. Is there an external fuel filter on the 95 3.9s?

Message: Chris...the prob you described sounds like a vacume leak in the supply side of the fuel pump module...if the fuel level gets below the leak...the pump won't keep up with engine volume requirements...like having a hole in the straw of a milkshake...shake above hole-no prob...shake below hole-much more difficult...the module may need to replaced as a complete unit...I use AC Delco only.

Message: Hey there, old thread but i'm sure more people have been having this issue.
I've got pretty much the same issue, gets to half a tank or less and engine sputters so much it feels like its going to quit (rpm's take a dive then go back up, then dive down) and feels like it's not getting enough gas (especially on hills etc). Gets worse the longer I drive.
I've got a 95 dakota with the 3.9L v6. The fuel filter is inside the fuel pressure regulator assembly on top of the fuel pump (which is located inside the fuel tank). There is no in-line fuel filter on this truck. I phoned a dodge dealer, and apparently there is no separate fuel regulator part you could buy and then install your own in-line filter for easy filter changes (if someone knows of a part, let me know ithinkicant (at) hotmail (dot) com.
The easiest way to get at this is to call up a couple friends and take off your truck bed. This is especially true if you don't have a nice shop to work in or you can't jack it up high enough to be comfortably working under it. All you have to do is disconnect some clip-together wires at the corners of your truck bed, your fuel lid (an easy two screws), and unscrew 6 to 8 bolts (depending on short box or long).
Once this is done you have real easy access to the fuel pump and assembly. The factory fuel pump has a larger filter at the bottom of the fuel pump, as well as a fuel pressure regulator/filter combo unit that looks like this http://info.rockauto.com/getimage/getimage.php?imagekey=937323&imageurl=http%3A//info.rockauto.com/Airtex/5G1118.jpg
You can either try out replacing the filter/regulator combo (grab Airtex part number 5G1118 which is $60, haven't found anything else OEM, and ordering straight from a dodge dealership i got quoted $120 for a measly fuel filter/regulator unit, $310 for the whole assembly) and make sure the bottom filter of your fuel pump isn't clogged to sh*t (i haven't tried this, so be warned! not sure if the airtex filter/regulator will fit in a factory pump and give the right fuel pressure!), or get the whole fuel pump and filter/regulator unit (airtex E7062M) for around $260 USD which according to airtex is a better system than the original ( http://www.airtexproducts.com/TSB/TSB-0506-01_ATX.pdf ).

Message: no need to drop the tank
8 bolts hold the bed down
take the gate off and unclip tail light wires
lift an move bed back
this is far easier then dropping a tank
and take a chance of spilling gas, breaking wires and/or fuel lines
when you install the new pump
check for index lines
needs to be installed in proper direction
for pump and fuel gauge to work properly
