Subject: 3.9 Tuneup and Mods IP: Logged
Message: Hello All,
I have a stock 2000 dakota 3.9 v6 with 63k miles on it and it has never had a tune up. Only aftermarket part is a cold air filter (cheap kind, 3” PVC pipe leading from the air hat down to a K&N filter). Although the truck runs fine except for that P0442 code it shot out the other day. I am planning on cleaning the TB and IAC sensor, changing the plugs, plug wires, rotor, cap, thermostat, relocating the IAT sensor to the cold air intake, taking the rubber flap off that goes in front next to radiator (passenger side), and flushing out the radiator. I think that’s all.
Let me first say, this website has a lot of information and very informative people.
From what I gather on this website and speedtweaks.net, use these parts listed below
Plugs – Autolite 3923 (colder range)
Plug Wires - ? Need help with this, keep in mind this is a stock ignition.
Borg Warner Cap #C273 and Rotor #D223 (brass components only) Coming from Bernd website.
180 Degree RobertShaw thermostat
Please if you don’t like the suggestion above or have used them and didn’t like them, let me know before I go out and buy this stuff in the next couple of weeks. I am in hurry.
Now for some other questions about the free mods like S-bolt, TPS mod, relocation of the IAT sensor. Are these really worth it, even though they are pretty much free except for the labor involved???
For the relocation of the IAT sensor I read somewhere to use 16 gauge wire to extend the wires to the cold air intake and to use 1/4” brass NPT plug from Lowes or Home Depot and maybe teflon tape for the plug.
I don’t really plan on doing much else to the truck unless I can get better gas mileage. I will eventually change the muffler, but I haven’t decided which one yet. Maybe buy a stage I chip but that is probably stretching it until I can make some real money (college student).
Thanks

Message: Thanks Dan for guiding me to all these different websites and sharing information. I have found an ambundence of material, and now I am trying to put it to some use. I was hoping to get some opinions from people who have tried these parts and didn't like them for some reason or the people that still have the parts listed above in there truck. That way I can make a decision on what to buy and what to stay away from. It seems almost every website has the same performance tips that are relatively cheap besides the labor, ex. S-bolt, IAT relocation, and TPS mod. I really do need to know what plug wires to buy, I would hate to buy the MSD 8.5mm if they didn't result in some sort of performance or economy value. Also would it be better to buy that IAT mod from Bernd or just extend mine to the cold air intake? Thanks

Message: Anyone willing to make sugguestions on the parts listed above..... I can't seem to find the robert shaw thermostat or the borg warner cap and rotor, anybody know where I might find these parts? Autozone doesn't seem to have them listed on there website and I still don't know what brand to buy and use for spark plug wires. Your responses would be very helpful.

Message: DakotaDan tried the 180 T-stat swap and said that it didn't work well in his truck, so he switched back to the stocker. He also tried the Autolite plugs and reported the same thing. Others say they work OK, so maybe it just depends on the truck...older trucks seem to have better luck with these changes. I bought a Robert Shaw GT755-180 T-stat and gasket at Autozone, but I never installed it in my '02 V6 due to the problems that Dan reported.
As I understand it, Bernd no longer offers the IAT adjuster, and getting anything out of Speedtweaks right now is a bit of a problem, to say the least. If you really want to try the IAT relocation, I'd recommend just buying a second IAT sensor from your dealer, and leaving the stock one in place. Then, you don't have to worry about plugging up the hole, and you can just move your connector back if you have to take the truck in for service.
If you have a NAPA store close by, they sell the Echlin brand of cap and rotor that is a direct replacement for the Borg Warner parts...#M026 and M028 for the V6 parts.
I have a set of MSD 8.5mm Superconductor wires and a set of Crower 1.7 rockers that I haven't installed yet, too. I'll probably get around to that in a month or two...my truck still has less than 5K on it. I'm not expecting any real boost from the wires, maybe a little smoother idle. I thought the red wires would look cool...I also got some new red nylon wire looms to go with them. I'm hoping that the 1.7 Crowers will give me some extra boost in conjunction with the headers, Dynomax, F&B TB and Intense intake that I already have on the truck.
I don't regard the S bolt as a mod...it's only purpose is to reattach the airhat to the F&B TB, since the holes are offset.

Message: Summit Racing lists an Accel tune-up kit for 92-99 3.9 Magnum engines. Not sure why it wouldn't work on the 2000. You might want to call and verify or check around and see if everything ignition wise is the same for 99 and 2000. The part number is ACC-TST10. It includes an Accel cap and rotor, Extreme 9000 wires and U-Groove plugs, all for $79.
Next, when you pull the throttle body off the truck, consider grinding off the air horns and a small port job. Don't remove anything below the blades.
Don't waste any money on a Jet Chip. You will feel a difference with just TB and ignition mods.

Message: Thanks, Pistolero for the information and Cbsdakota that tuneup kit looks great but I called Summit and apparently the cap and rotor are different for the 2000. But is looks like a super deal for anyone that has 92-99. Any other suggestions or tuneup kits that would work. I left an email for accel to contact me about a 2000 tuneup kit and if they offered one for my year.

Message: The only difference in wire size is in the insulation. A quality set of wires can be found in 7.5mm for around $30. I have had 9mm wires on cars in the past but only because I needed the extra insulation, not because it flowed spark any better. That is a horrible misconception that too many people hold. If you want good wires for your stock ignition, invest $25-$30 in a set of Autolite 7.5mm wires. You'll be happy with the results and you wont break the bank.
Just my 2 cents.
98 cc4x4, 5.5 inch suspension lift, 33x12.50 Xterrains on AE589's, ram-air intake, 3.92 gears, v8 tb, 180 t-stat, spintech turned down exhaust, and all the other little stuff make for one bada$$ 4x4.

Message: There is a difference in wires. But it has to do with resistance (R). Lower rated wires in ohms will give a hotter faster spark at the cylinder. There are different conductors, different insulation properties, brass vs zinc plate terminals, and shielding that all add up to (a small) improvement based on R. For Performance gains, remember this: engines make torque from the rotation of the crank by ignition of fuel in a cylinder, in simple terms. You need AIR, SPARK, GAS, COMPRESSION. Thats it. Everything else is a gimmick. Alot of crap out there (I didn't say anything about bernd, his buddy, and Speedt-WEAK-s he cooked his own goose). If your purchases dont improve one of the four fundamentals then just send me the money. I suggest that the best place to start is getting it to breath better. Bore out your intake or get the fastman tb. Go with headers and dual exhaust. Use the K&N air filter and improve the air-intake with a ram air cold intake or induction. Use good cap, rotor, plugs, wires, coil. Use good gas. Change the oil more than 2 or 3 times a year. The belt driven fan steals power, get the flexicool elec fan. Lighten the load as opposed to adding winches and bushgards. Losing weight adds HP (and MPG) at about 1 hp gain for 10 lbs dropped (whatever, you get the point). There are some valid ways to trick the electronics to give some performance, but there is a trade off. You will see what I mean as you read some real good posts in this forum. Personally, I think the best mods are ones that make the motor breath better and spark hotter, ie intake and exhaust. Then mechanically, as you BUILD power from camshaft, rocker arm, pully changes, gear reductions, the possible gains can be achieved 'cause you did a good job making sure there is a good spark, lots of air, and plenty of fresh lube and lo-temp coolant flowing to spin your a$$ off the benchseat.
91 4x4 4spd atx, 180 deg t-stat, MOPAR headers, edelbr dual exhaust, Flexicool elecfan, Doubleroller t/c set (no tensioner, $50 in my pocket and motor is lighter), Autolite3923 sparks at .0375. K&N. NO mod to TB, iat, tps or any other electronic gimicks and tricks. Custom 4 gage power, starter, and ground cables. Carquest premium hd lt shocks, Also using their Cap, Rotor and O2 senser right off their shelf. Interstate 60mo battery, Tint, 2" lift. Hi flow Water pump. all Gates Hoses, NAPA belts and 120K miles. See? you also have alot of investment and mods on your truck you forgot about.
Now get to work.

Turn the key as follows: on/off/on/off/on.
The codes will then display in the odometer as Pxxxx and it will display Pdone when it's finished or no codes present. Then you can go to the webpage Bob posted and find out what each means.
