Subject: Does hi-test gas harm anything?

Message:
Like so many Dak owners, my Y2K 3.9L SLT has been plagued with the dreaded ping. I've monitored this forum and have heeded the wisdom of those who have fought the same fight: Autolite 3923 plugs and mid-level gas helped, but did not eliminate the pinging. Belly pan gasket okay; spark plug wires not crossed; O2 sensor okay. I have not had the PCM reflashed as many have reported that it doesn't help or worse. The only thing I have found to eliminate the pinging is to run hi-test gas. Other than I shouldn't have to and it's a bit more expensive, am I doing any harm to the engine to run hi-test as the norm?

There will be no harm done, other than your wallet.

I have 2 suggestions to reduce pinging in your truck.

1 - Run a good upper cylinder cleaner through 1 tank of gas such as B-12 Chemtool. This will help to clean out any carbon deposits in the engine that can cause pre-ignition or ping.

2 - Install a 180 degree thermostat. This will lower the engine temperature, and reduce pinging.
Many people prefer the RobertShaw thermostat. There are many posts about this in the forum. People have reportedly found these thermostats at Autozone, or Speedtweaks.net

ive had the same problem with mine, that ping is so irritating, i talked to my mechanic he suggested the same things, basicly we have to lower temp and it should go away, that is why high test gas works because it burns colder,, its no big deal now that prices are low,, i can pay 1.03 for mid grade at the locan enron, but when the prices go up , its back to the cheap stuff.

i was going back and forth between 87 89 and 93 and it seemed to to the worst with 93 bur i didnt like how it sounded on the other so I tried to get it used to 93 and I reset the PCM(I don't know if it was necessary) but I seemed to help and now the thing is running better then ever(also removed my powercrap spacer)(just made the ride more jerky, no noticable milage gain) but anyway i like high test personally

Is 89 octane gas a mix of 87 and 91 done right at the pump, and by the pump? I read that some new stations were doing that but can't confirm it.

I talked to my machanic about the ping aswell, He mentioned we can "cheat" the system by making the truck run a little richer?.... he says it will eat more gas but it would get rid of the "ping"

Anyone know if this works?
