Subject: PO442 Code, Check Engine Light IP: Logged
Message: Hello Everyone,
Please help. Today I started up my truck and the check light stayed on while I was driving. Since then it has come on and it will not go back out. I know I probably should reset the computer by unpluging the battery but I want to solve what is making this shoot this code out. I went up to Autozone earlier in the day and had them check the codes to find it was a po442 code, something like a Evp. Leak, small leak, the guy at the zone wanted me to buy a gas cap. This doesn't seem right to me. In the past few weeks I have noticed a slightly rougher idle but not too bad, also every once in a while when coming to a sharp stop, the engine waits to stall, but has never stalled completely. I have a 2000 dakota 3.9 and the only parts I have put on it is an aftermarket cold air intake and PVC valve. I change the oil every 3000. The truck has 63,000 miles and I bought this truck new and have treated her like a princess from the beginning. If anyone has some ideas or have had this problem before please respond.
Thanks

Take the guy's advice, 99.9% of the time it is the gas cap. And that is the cheapest thing to start with.

Check for a cracked hose under the hood which is near the green test cap for the evaporative
system. Once you locate this cap then follow the hose to the plastic "T" coupler and check
both of those hoses attached to the coupler(below the fuse box). That is where the hose cracks most of the time.
Look for a split hose on the canister on the frame rail drivers side.
Defective u-shaped hose on the canister under the truck.
Defective EVAP canister, Purge or vent solenoid.
This is if the gas cap is ok.
