I had the same problem 99 slt 3.9 with 5-speed tranny. I bought it with 3 miles them after about 120,000 miles i heard a whining. It was only up at the high speeds at first and then it slowly started at all speeds. I took off my differential cover and saw that the gears were chipped, and very worn out. I had to replace it. If its your differential and its low on oil or the oil has never been changed (i.e. serviced like its supposed to) I would bet the house that its probably going to be your differential.

When do you hear the noise? Is it when its your accelerating? slowing down? When its in gear or out of gear?

I have the same thing happining with my 89'
2wheel drive 3.9 . It makes this whining noise
while slowing down. When I hold a constant
speed it's fine though. I've had the truck for
10yrs and it's made this "whining noise" for at
least 8yrs. Not to say that the problem should
be ignored, but my truck has run fine without
anything blowing up. Yet. 219,000 miles!

I have had the same problem with mine from day one. At 40-47 miles and hour it wines. I have had the rear end checked, replaced, fluid checked, and it won't go away. The dealer has not been able to do anything. However, I have had no problems with it. The good thing, all of this was covered under warranty, but still, nothing has been fixed, and the usual, we don't hear anything....

ok, i had my diff fluid changed about 6000 miles ago from jiffy lube. there is a rubber gromit that looks like it is leaking. i heard something from this site, that there could be condensation getting in. it makes noise most of the time, in and out of gear, anything above 25 mph. i have 100,000 miles on a '98. i know my syncros (sp) are shot.
