stick with the 2.5. it works really well on our
trucks. and since your redoin the exhuast get
creative with the exit after the muffler. you can
use your stock pipeing but what fun is that. and i
have a flowmaster 40series and i love the sound.

I have a 98 dakota with stock setup and flowmaster exhaust and I love it. I have 40 series with the aggressive tone and it sounds better than a lot of V8's I know, but when you get it up to around 3k in rpm's it starts to loose the exhaust sound and the engine makes more noise. I say you should go with the 2.5/3" to get the look and extra humm!

I was just messin around. I have the 70 series big block flowmaster muffler on my stock exhaust. It is fairly quite but sounds great to me. Plus it was an exact fit to the stock muffler that was on it.

Summit racing web site. $98.00 It was perfect for my application. A performance muffler with a mellow exhaust note. Here is the link to see it http://store.summitracing.com/ then go to manufacturer search and drop down menu to flowmaster and put this part# in FLO-52572.

I just got a 40 series welded in about an hour ago. it sounds good, and I know it will get a little deeper as time goes on, but as the tech drove it around the corner, I had some compliments. I like it.

oh yeah, the muffler made my truck 3 inches higher, and recieved about 50 more horses. MY TRUCK CAN DO ANYTHING!!!

Yeah, that was sarcasm.

I had the Flowmaster 40 series NON delta flow installed on my stock setup. But, I also had a Carsound high flow cat installed and the stock exhaust exit on my truck is 3". So, I imagine it has quite a bit more sound. I love it though. I also had a 50 Series Delta Flow on my last truck (2000 V6) and it sounded good. But not as good as my new truck! Good luck in whatever you do.

I have the 40 series on my truck also. It rumbles under 3,000rpm. After 3,000 rpm it sounds ricey!!!!! So think about it before you go and change out!!!!!!

Oh, and I agree with the above statement. I have a 40 series on my 3.9 Dak.

I had a 40 series on my 96 V6 with stock cat and pipe, I thought it sounded pathetic, a little tinny, kinda like a really big Honda.
Stepped up to 3" from Y pipe back, with CatCo high flow and a mandrel bent tailpipe exiting in the stock loacation, same 40 series, it sounded good at idle, but when wrapped up it sounded like a Supra on steroids, I hated it and it droned horribly at highway speed.
I had replaced it with a Magnaflow, I think it was designed for an Excursion, huge muffler. It sounds very good, a nice, deep throaty roar when it winds up, I love it and it doesn't drone. I also have picked up about 3-4 mpg on the highway and the butt-o-meter says it's picked up a little torque. I know it pulls the boat better.

hey 94dakota
i'm currious to know why you said

"just got a 40 series welded in about an hour ago. it sounds good, and I know it will get a little deeper"

if its a flowmaster it wont get any deeper
correct me if i'm wrong guys
but flowmaster is a steel "Chambered" muffler
atleast thats the way they started out
and if they havent changed then there will be no difference in sound,

mufflers that get deeper are fiberglass packed
and as the glass sets, & packs tighter
they get deeper over time,

I don't know about that. I installed a 40 series about a year ago, at first I didn't like it becuase of the ricey sound, but it did deepen up dramitically after about 3 or 4 months. It only sounds slightly tinny if I jack it up to about 4500RPM now. And yes, it is a SS chambered muffler, no glass...pretty much a resonance chamber.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

The muffler will get a deeper tone somewhere around 200-300 miles as the computer adjusts to the difference in backpressure of the different muffler. Anytime you change out anthing to do with intake/exhaust, the computer should tweak itself over a couple hundred miles.

My Flowmaster gives me the same MPG at 70 as 65. No improvement at low speeds. The noise in the cab is irritating.
Gibson Headers for my 3.9 made a huge improvement. Power around 2,000RPM where the engine lives, better MPG. Scary acceleration. Well, for a 6 anyway.
