Subject: Oil Pressure Gauge IP: Logged
Message: In my dash the check gauges lights blink, and the needle for oil pressure goes to 0, and then it might hop back up, sometimes it doesn't. I know the Oil Pressure isn't low! The first thought was the oil pressure sending unit. I replaced that, and same thing. So, does anybody have any idea what it could be? I would really like to get this fixed. Please reply. Thanks

Message: Plugged oil filter may be the culprit. At least it was on my son's S-10.
Are you using a FRAM?

Message: Yes Fram is the kind that I have got on there. It's got about 3,300 miles on it. I usually change at every 5,000. Were you going to compliment Fram, or Degrade it?

Message: Could also be a faulty PCM, BCM, or instrument cluster. Do any of the other gauges act funny?

Message: No, that is the only needle that acts up. That is the only other thing that we can think of it being, and now I'm catching hell because I put in the speed-glow. All I've heard is, you should have left that alone, I knew it'd mess something up.

Message: I've experinced the same thing, only my oil level is fine but my oil pressure actually cuts out every time it does this.
I first experienced this in the winter of '01 and then again last month. The first time I took it in to the dealership they said there was sludge built up due to not changing the oil and filter, which I told them is B.S. So then they tell me it's the aftermarket filter(Fram by the way) They wanted me to pay $75 for a MOPAR filter! I bitched that the filter was not the problem. So then the @$$hole tells me I must have submerged my engine!!!! I told him that isn't true and he proceeded to tell me I must be lying!!! He insisted it was submerged and all he would do is drop a new engine in. I left all pissed off and called Chrysler's complaint line and all I got was 'we stand by our mechanics diagnosis'
So this problem disappeared once I replaced my oil pump. Now that it has started again I'm assuming this cold weather must have something to do about it! Anyway,I'm just annoyed with it all. I needed to vent!

Message: On the subject of Fram filters being good.........I have heard that due to the small "micron" size of the filtering material, it not only filters out more particles....It also impeads flow. I also know that on Frams "PH45" for GM's 350, there is not a check valve in the filter that retains some oil pressure when the engines not running, however, I'm not sure if that small tid-bit of technology applies to us.

Message: Check oil pressure sending unit. Change filter every 3500 mi. It only costs $4 plus about $7 for oil. Use an engine cleaner. I like the one that you pour into the oil filler and idle for 5 minutes. It is a solvent that makes your oil drain like water. Use it only once a year. Too frequent use can be harmful and deposits don't build up that fast anyway. Always get your motor good and hot before draining. Burns can feel good.
Good people of this forum, Please start diagnosing and fixing problems with the easiest and least costly means that you can do yourself. I think everyone knows dealership shops charge the highest for labor, use higher priced Mopar parts, and always charge for diagnostics. It is nothing but aggravation to you because about 50% of the time you knew what the problem was and suspected you could've fixed it better, easier, and cheeper (not cheeply). When I say things like this there are always one or two responses like "I work at a dealership.." and "Everyone thinks us dealership mechanics rip you off". I trained and certified chrysler technicians. Paid by Chrysler to know every thing there is to know about serviceable problems. I own dodge vehicles and own a dakota today. I suspect every dodge mechanic I worked with was top notch. But they work for a dealer and are required to do things a certain way. Errors are gonna happen, like what Bastarboy was talkin about. I've seen that over and over. Finally, in my humble and worthless opinion, there is nothing wrong with fram filters if installed properly. Once I torqued an oil filter on too tight to see the effect. They will weep if overtightened. One full turn after seating the gasket really is the ticket.
