Does anybody know if the O2 sensors (before they fail) can be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner to remove the carbon build up without damaging the sensor??

I have to change the cat and muffler so I figured a $7.00 can of cleaner is better than another $100.00 on O2 sensors. Mine are still functioning properly.

Thanks to all!

from what ive read no
itll foul them more
every 3 months before an oil change i drive the truck to the store to get the oil and filtre
on the way back i top off the tank with some premium gas and put in a bottle of injector cleaner. grab a bottle of water,
when i get back home ,i pop the hood and remove the breather from the throttle body . handling the throttle by hand i pour water down the intake in spurts not letting if stall the engine.
the water gives a steam cleaning effect to the combustion chambers ,cats and so on , and blows the crap out the ass end
change the oil and then take the truck out on the highway for a run to finish up

93 and a 2000,still running havent replaced either

they produce enough steam on there own.
do it to a few friends vehicles before the air test ,always pass , even the ones that use a little oil

First, I DO NOT suggest you pour water down the intake path. The working end of the O2 can become contaminated, and one killer is anti-freeze. (so if you are leaking coolant into the combustion process, you can almost assure yourself you have affected it) Other contaminates can include various cleaners and engine by-products from combustion. It coats the pores in the sensor that allow it to "see" oxygen. Remember, O2 sensors do need periodic replacement. If you feel that your O2 sensor is not performing as it should, it is best to put an analyzer on the PCM and actually read it as it is working. This is one of the most critical sensors for fuel milage and warm drivability.

You can use Mopar's Combustion Chamber Conditioner to clean the upper end, (and yes it does a fair job on cleaning O2 sensors, as it is also safe for them) and is a good pour in solution for restoring power, cleaning the intake tract and removing carbon deposits from the backside of the intake valves and the combustion chamber as well as the O2 sensor. Make sure you stay as close to idle as possible as you use it. (no wide open throttles) Just pay close attention to the directions, and after following the directions on the can (waiting the prescibed time for it to do it's thing)allow it to idle for 10 to 15 minutes, then drive it someplace where you can do some wide open throttling until you no longer see anything coming from the tailpipe.

Have fun,

Ram1500 Box,

Thanks for the input. Sounds like good advice. I don't think you want to fool with these O2 sensors any more than is necessary.
