I have a 1991 Extended cab Dak 4x4 with the 3.9L. Everythin on it is stock from the 8 1/4 rear end to the 7 1/4 front end that carry 3.92s. Up until recently the truck has ran wonderfully. As of lately ill be driving down the road and the truck will just die. When it dies the maint. Req. light goes dim, the only one that goes dim on the dash. I get out and unplug the three solenoids on the upper left of the motor and sometimes itll start back up and sometimes it won't. Any ideas? If i can't solve this problem i am thinking about pulling the v6 and putting a v8, but i am not sure what i would have to change if i do this. I have been told that the v6 tranny will bolt up to a 318/360 but what bout torque converter and etc. Also if i do this will the transfercase still work cause i think it is vacuum controlled not sure. I would like to know what year 318/360 i could use. What i mean is how far back can i go, would like to get rid of the computer controlled crap so i don't have this trouble anymore. I would really like to be able to salvage the v6 and not pull it out so if you have any ideas i would really appreciate them.

Do an onboard diagnostic using the CHECK ENGINE light. This is where I always start. Go here and follow the directions:

I have already done this many times. The truck does not show any trouble codes just the standard 55 for end test. Otherwise there is none.

Well I was having a similar problem. I would be driving, or idling at an intersection, and the truck would just suddenly die on me, and then it would take 5-10 minutes to get it started again. I found out later that my ignition was dying. My aftermarket ignition system was old and ready to be junked. Now, I just hook up the stock coil directly into the dist. and all is well.

My experience with these trucks has been that when something like this happens, its usually NOT some big, terrible, expensive thing to fix. Its likely just a small thing that has been overlooked. have you checked your ignition timing? what about fuel pressure from the fuel pump?

Fuel pressure is great to tb. Timing right on the money. Not sure what is causin it but it is annoying as hell good thing it has a new starter. I have also been told that it may be the pick up coil in the distributor. I am not sure because when it dies it has no spark and there is no fuel coming through the TB almost like the both gettin shut off. I don't know if a pick up coil would do that or not.

Are you sure the coil is good? Also, check the computer. Make sure some bolts havent started coming loose. Tighten everything around the computer nice a tight. I have a 1989 and have played this game one too many times. Something is causing you to not have any spark. computer. coil. and that's about it, since you arent finding any codes coming up.

However, before you do an onboard diagnostic using the CHECK ENGINE light, always disconnect the negative battery cable. Then let the truck sit like that for 5 minutes. Then hook it up again and run the truck for 10-15 minutes. ***THEN*** do the diagnositc, since now the computer has had a chance to start over, reset itself, and settle in during the 10-15 drive. This will give you a more accurate reading on the diagnostic.

comp tight. New coil two mnths ago and just bought new one 3 days ago they work on the other truck so i know they are good. i have already tried the reset with the computer to see if it throws a fault code and it still only flashes 55 which is the end test code. Only thing i have noticed is that the Main. Reqd goes very dim. About ready to just throw a 318 in it. Don't want to but gettin irritated with out the truck.
