Subject: Check Engine Light IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 Dakota Sport, 3.9 litre, 2 wheel drive. My check engine light will come on for about a week, sometimes as soon as I start it but mostly after it idles for about 60-90 seconds. Could a bad heater core cause this? Sometimes it sounds like water is "swooshing" around in the dash board! For whatever reason, it will go off for a couple of days but always returns. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Message: The CEL is all emissions stuff, could be something like an o2 sensor thats getting lazy. If you hear water swooshing around in the dash it could be that you have air in the cooling system, check the level in your radiator. I suppose that if there was air in the cooling system the CEL might turn on with a code for the coolant temp sensor, but that's not very likely, probably just an emmisions component but it's worth having it looked at.

Message: Thanks Jon, I appreciate the info. Are there one or two o2 sensors and do you know if they are hard to change. Thanks again.

Message: Well, I may have spoken too soon. The dreaded "Check Engine Light" is on once again. Stayed on since yesterday when I first started the truck. Gotta be the O2 sensor I'm figuring. I wish the damn bulb would just burn out, its been on so many times and too long!

Message: Tom...not sure if it works with 99's but try this: turn your key on-off-on-off-on and leave it on. a code should be displayed on your cluster. On my 93, the light blinks in repetition such as: 1-2-4-3-5-5...once you know your trouble code you can fix the problem.

Message: Check your local auto zone see if they will do a
free scan to pick up codes.
If not its worth the $50 to have it scaned it can
give you enough information to find and fix the
problem without the cost of replacing parts you
don't need to.
OBD 1 $130
OBD 2 $200
Buy one and do it your self you will never need
to take it to a dealer with your own scanner you
can do everything they can for diagnostics and
monitoring live sensor data while driving down
the roasd to pinpoint lazy sensors and intermitant
problems.
Diagnos like the big boys yourself
Monitor your o2, map, engine temp, tps, iat while
driving live data, its the only way to tune these
babies in, when all the sensors report good
data to the comp they run great, 1 bad sensor
can mess you all up.
Its a must have for anyone serious about tweaking
there motors, there are things you can moitor and
remove codes without a hard reset that removes all
your learned memory and starts from base tables.
Just a must have

Message: I have a 02 dakota quad cab. I think since ive owned it in 10/02 the light has come on like 4 times. DOdge replaced the engine thermostat, then the theromoastat valve, then the gas cap twice. Its on again. Ill try Autozone but at this point since im past 44k im going to go the do it myself approach if i can find a book for my year 3.9. Also I tried a Carolla gas cap on my truck last night it actually had a complete thread unlike the Dodge partial thread on the cap. It would tighten down so im thinking is something else at this point becaue the light stayed on after running for 4-5 minutes. Lets just say the gas cap was down tight, trust me.

Message: I have a big tip for everyone with this problem. I have had the same problem several times. I found the error code ad looked it up. It came to a small emissions leak. It is the gas cap. I have 44,000 on my 02 Dakota Quad Cab v6. Through some tinkering with the gas cap i noticed it wasnt tightening. This is becasue the black form that fits over the white screw portion gets weakened. By weakened I mean the plastic is cheap and flimsy. If you get this light start to squeeze your gas cap when tightening. This makes the plastic pins hold the white portion tighter until it is tight. After a few engine starts your light will turn off on its own. I think it was about 10 or so starts before my engine light cleared. Ive replaced my gas cap several times. It just that the plastic on the black portion is cheap.
