Message:
I've got a '93 Dakota with the V6 @ 125k. Began having problems with starts in the cold. It would start, but seemed to be laboring and didn't sound right.
During this time I've had 2 occasions where the truck wouldn't shift into overdrive in the a.m. after a tough start. At lunch and after work it went into the high gear. I've also noticed the overdrive light doesn't work. Is the overdrive switch electronic and could a weak battery effect shifting?

the over drive wont work until the engine hits a particular temperature.if the engine is over cooling then the OD wont work. make sure you are getting at least 180F on the gauge.
the over drive is electric ,with the light on the OD is OFF.
if its not coming on check the bulb in the switch, then check that you have power at the switch .there is a fuse for the light and it also runs the cluster lights ,
there is also on the transmission its self an overdrive solenoid, it has 3 wires black and dark blue with some tracers, check its connection.
then follow those wires up to the right fender(could be on the left) and you should find a harness, check its connection.
at the rear of the battery there is a black connector that runs to a splice. in the connector you looking for a red/white wire,a dark green/yellow wire, and a dark blue wire, follow the blue wire to a splice or plug, this splice puts power, to your over drive, egr, evap, ignition feed , a problem there would explain some hard starting,
.

Message: Thanks for the info.
I tested the battery at lunch and it was poor. Replaced it and it starts like a champ. I was also able to get into the highway gear this noon. I'm going to get it into the garage tonight and check my connections
Thanks again for the help

Message: switch has two bulbs ,one lites "OD" on dash, the other lites the yellow of the button. The bulbs are solder in place. You must disassemble the switch to get to the yellow button lite bulb. I got the bulbs at radioshack.
