I had pinging with my 1997 dak v6 at 40,000 miles running an MSD ignition with the Platnium +4 spark plugs. Put a 180 thermostat and it helped tremendously. Took a trip to South Dakota summer of 2003. Temperatures at times were a 112 degrees the truck DID-NOT PING AT ALL USING 85 OCTANE FUEL IN THESE HOT TEMPERATURES. FRANKLY I WAS SURPRISED.

If your sure it isn't the motor then it might be the ac compressor, mine makes a wierd noise, but only whenever it kicks on, i can't even hear after I start going down the road. Just a thought.

i have a 87 dak 5.2 929 swap and have placed 300'000 on it and this pinging has never been an issue. it was a four banger to start and i still run the v6 hoses raid and all what i have found to keep it from pinging is to keep the pcv valve from getting cloged and causing it to get stuck open. its a common issue to have one get cloged and cause pinging and oil loss. something else you might want to check is your vac hoses as they can cause a lean burn even on only one cyl. also on the note of plugs try using a lower heat it helps with pinging i run 87 with no issues. another issue i have seen alot with dodge engines is that the coolent passages in the head gasket are tiny and lack the flow thats needed when your coolent starts to break down. changing coolent and flushing the block is not a bad thing to consider honestally with enough care and a little time you might get 300k too as the only things iv changed other then water pumps and alts. the only things iv changed was the timeing chain at 230k just because i have the engine out to repaint the truck. when i fliped it lol. but anyways i hope you guys have better luck finding the cause
with the best of luck brian
