Is it "pinging" or a rattle. My 93 has done this since new. Sounds like "spark knock" or a valve tappet. Dealer told me to use higher octane fuel. I have since discovered it is the PCV check valve rattling in the plastic housing. Now that I know what it is I have accepted it as "normal" and now have 110,000 miles with same sound but no other problems.

Dodge Dakota Pinging Problems:

True story: My brother bought a 1997 V8 king cab manual tranny Dakota, and it worked fine on 87 octane until almost exactly 30,000 miles. Then heavy pinging began. 89 octane worked fine until almost exactly 60,000 miles, then heavy pinging again! After 60K, only 92 octane would work without ping.

I bought a 2002 V6 regular cab manual tranny new and had the EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE! Running it on 87 octane, at almost exactly 30K miles, heavy pinging began, and I had to switch up to 89 octane, which worked fine UNTIL I hit almost exactly 60K, and now 89 octane pings heavily also! Now I run 92 because I have no choice.

The two theories I have heard so far are:

1) You are supposed to replace the oxygen sensors every 30,000 miles.

2) Carbon buildup in the compustion chamber slowly raises the compression ratio, and short of taking the whole engine down and cleaning all the carbon out of the chambers, there is nothing you can do about it.

Does anyone out there have the same experience? Did you ever fix it, and if "yes," what was the fix?

So far, everyone I have discussed this with is mystified or guesses at the cause. Surely if this happened to both my and my brother's truck, it must a common Dakota problem.

Thanks!

I had that problem on my '94 Dakota when idle.

It sounded kinda like the tapping a diesel engine makes or valve tapping noise...

Turned out to be the timing chain...

It was replaced and there was another part or two involved. I think there was a service bulletin about it too.

It was covered under the power-train warranty.
I think I had 57K on it then.

I am having this pinging problem with my Dakota also. I am using 91 Octane and it's starting to do the same. Anyone have any ideas.

First, get your self a can of Combustion Chamber Conditioner from your local Mopar dealer. I prefer the spray rather than the pour type. Follow the directions on the can and then allow to set for a couple of hours after you completed the entire can. Restart, and drive normally for a few miles until the white smoke stops coming out of the tailpipe. Just a note, don't do this inside of the garage, and try to drive outside of congested traffic until the tailpipe clears up.

This makes me so happy to read this. Glad I see I'm not the only one.

The rip-off artists formally known as my dealer told me I needed a Firmware upgrade as well.

My 2000 Dakota has had pinging since it was new.

After under 20000mi had passed over 3.5yrs; a coolant leak was discovered as well as being qt low on oil when I took it to a oil shop for a change.

I immediately took it to the rip-off artists and was told:
1) coolant leak was due to t-stat gasket and WAS NOT covered under my xtended warranty. Cost to repair= $169 pts/labor.
2) Pinging was caused by firmware and needed an "upgrade like my windows computer." (or that's the anology the "tech" used on the phone). It would cost $79.99 to "upgrade".

I told them I need to make some calls before I approved the work.

So, Autozone has the same gasket for $2. and took me less than 1 hr to change out (I was nitpicky).

I contacted DODGE customer service via their WWW page and eventually was told:

"Your dealer is empowered by DaimlerChrysler to determine the merits of
any goodwill policy consideration for repairs that are not covered by
your manufacturer's warranty. I would recommend addressing your
concerns with the Service Manager. "

So, basically... "too bad mr customer; but we don't care".

As far as I'm concerned; Both Dodge and the rip off artists will be getting a BBB complaint from me.

Don't see myself ever buying Dogge products again.
