Subject: my 95 dakota wont get spark plz help... IP: Logged
Message: well i got a '95 dodge dakota v-6 that i can't get to get spark. the shop replaced the coil, distributor moduler(sp?) cap and rotor and all the plugs and wires checked out. he said he was changing the computer next, and that was to much $$ so i took it out of that shop. does anyone know what it could be?
i heard this from a jeep forum
"The alternator has an intergal part called a rectifier...which adjust the juice output. If it's defective, then sometimes NO juice is passed thru."

Message: he's prob right about the computer, before spending that much money you should have checked to see if the coil was the problem. the computer is what grounds the coil to give the coil fire. i wouldn't have paid the shop anything since he didn't fix the problem. you could also have a crank or cam posistion sensor bad. i'm guessing he changed the pick up module, but i would bring it to like a dealership where they can put it on a computer and diagnos it.

Message: Daniel d is mostly right. The ASD relay fired by the 'puter allows voltage to flow. The computer may say "spark now" but if the relay is dead... also check HE pick-up leads and the pick up if equiped. check ground wire. treat the ignition system as a curcuit and check all connections and leads for shorts, breaks and poor connections.

Message: (cont) This is interesting and is taken out of context but read on.
...and if no distributor signal is received by the engine controller, the ground will be removed from the ASD circuit DE-ACTIVATING the ASD relay. If the ASD relay is not ACTIVATED, battery voltage is not supplied to the ignition coil. This means everything may be new and working but still no spark signal is sent to coil through the asd relay. Check like a curcuit and find the darn short or bad connection at the distributor or between the distributor and the other components discussed to death above. Now, if there is still no spark and all connections, wires, rotor, cap, coil, distributor assembly, plugs, relays, fuses, leads, he pickup and leads(if equiped), and ground wire are all "good", then I would suspect the SBEC (computer)

CP,
Good input on the ASD relay. I have to read-up on this device.......this auto-shutdown relay sounds 'troublesome".

Best wishes.....

Message: i am having the same problem with my 88 dodge shadow. i have replaced the computer, he pickup unit, ignition coil, asd relay. i still have no spark. i tried to re-route the ground for the asd relay and i've been told to try to re-route the power input for the ignition coil. you can try that but i can tell you right now that the computer is not the problem.
you asked where the asd relay is located--it's in front of the driver's side strut tower.
i havent' heard about the piece on the alternator but i might try that one
what i do know about the asd relay though is that it tends to be a royal pain because dodge/chrysler is the only company that has that unit.

Message: Just a thought, check to see if the rotor is spinning when the engine is turned over. There is a sheer pin that holds the distirbutor drive gear to the distributor shaft. It's a longshot, but it's sheered on me before.

Message: Are you getting fuel while cranking
Pull a plug and look after cranking and see if the
plug is wet and let me know
There is a red wire about a foot behind the power
dist box drivers side under hood in harnass that
goes to 3 wires, fuel, ign and comp power that
caroads.
You need to untape the harnass to find this and
solder the wires togather tape with elec tape
than friction tape this is a chrysler TSB

sorrie don't drink my friend
This is a well known prob with some year daks this
connection caroads and you will lose both spark
and fuel
That is why I told him to crank it over and see
if the plugs are wet
If they are its not the prob but if there dry and
no spark its the first thing to check this
connection in the harnass.

Message: Wow! That's alot of parts to change out. Only thing's left to change is the computer and the fuel pump at this point. I highly recommend a shop manual for future problems and not that crazy shop you went to cause they are guessing at your expense. Sorry you're having a nightmare of a problem, been there before. Did you check your fuses and relays also?

Message: I may have the Exact same problem on a 1995 dakota slt 2 wd with 3.91 eng throttle body injection ..diagnosing it now..Any hints ? Found what looks like a bad ballast resistor with funky wires looking burnt, and ignition coil will not show spark even with a wire directly hooked up to battery from positive side of coil.. I Traced all wiring and found weak spots but still no spark..Computer module looks new, relays all check okay, no fuel pump unless wired direct///Goin in to change Crankshaft position sensor now..Please advise..I am assuming that the Ignition Coil is only bad componet so far...

Message: Can you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the
key on?
Also go under the hood
Drivers side inner fender well
Black fuse/relay box
remove it
untape the wire harness
You are then looking for a splice of 3/4 red/white
wires
the splice either breaks or gets crudded up
cut it out and re'do the splice
tape the harness back up
reinstall fuse relay box
