Message: I have a 98 V6, and just in the last couple of days, it will start, and then it'll die, if you keep your foot on the throttle, and hold it at about 1000rpm's, it will eventually idle, but if you just start it, and try to let it idle, it'll die. It starts really good though, and we've been having some cold,( -15 F), weather, but it'll start everytime, it just wont idle, and then after you drive it, just for a short distance, it will idle. Are there any sensors or anything that'll cause this. I have a k&n airfilter and a flowmaster exaust I put on this summer, and a throttle spacer deal, that everyone says is no good, but I bought it before I found this page. Sorry so long, thanks for any help

Message: I dont have an answer for you but Ill tell you, my 97 V6 Dakota is doing the very same thing. I have to put one foot on the gas and one on the brake, put it into gear and get it going. Within seconds all is well and it performs flawlessly. I had wondered if it was a fuel pump but I am not sure. If you find out what the cause is please let me know. I will do the same.

Message: I have been running into the same kind of situation with my 98, most times when I am running errands or driving short trips, it will start right up and idle. At other times when I start it, the idle will drop right off and it will quit. I might have to restart it a couple times before the idle catches itself after giving it a little gas to coax it. It always starts fine first thing, but after I have been running around, it starts doing this. It has new plugs, rotor, cap, and wires.

Message: I encountered a similar problem. I bought my 96 3.9L last saturday. Monday I go on a short run....truck started Ok and ran good. I start the truck 15min. later, and the engine dies.....will not run. I call the mechanic and he's mistified....me too, because it was running great.
Later in the day he tells me he replaced the AIS unit.....auto idle-speed motor. The temperature has been about 15*F here, so perhaps the temperature is a big factor with these problems.
This is my first DDakota truck......I'm happy with it......when it runs........ Yo!
I'm a little apprehensive with this "PCM" unit though........my other truck was an 85 without the computer diagnostics.......
* Good site..........for OBD II info

Message: I've been having the same problem with my 98. I just put in a new batery and new cable ends and it has a fairly fresh set of plugs and wires. I was thinking the same thing with the AIS or TPS.

Message: This problem is more than likely battery related. Mopar batteries are 60 month batteries and most of the people on this thread have trucks over the 60 month period. I recently had this same problem on my truck and took it in. They said the battery was still semi descent but for some reason when 5 years passes they start to get steadily worse. Give it a shot if you still have the original mopar battery.

MetalgreenDak,
My Haynes manual shows it on the (rear) of the T/B. It is described in the "Emissions Control Systems" section of this book(pg.6-3).
General description....."the AIS motor is an output device controlled by the SMEC or SBEC II. It controls the idle rpm according to engine load".
Truck has been Ok since it was replaced, so I don't think its the battery, in my case. These cold temps. can cause all kinds of problems, so keep an open mind.

Message: If you have a 99 or older dak with the original battery ---- replace the battery, the original are worthless. The dak won't idle with a bad or weak battery. Cold weather weakins a battery, hi RPM will charge it, temporayily. You're going to need a battery so buy a decent one. Costco has a 650 CCA with a 3 yr 100% return for around $ 40. I know I just bought one. truck runs great now

Message: Metalgreendak,
The "ISC"........Idle speed control actuator is used on the V8's. The "AIS".....automatic idle speed motor is used on the V6's. So I guess the AC means actuator control......I'm sure some of the pros here could go into more detail about the different parts. I didn't know the difference between a carburetor and throttle Body until last week.

Message: the same thing has happened to me twice. the first time my factory battery died and i bought a new battery and it was fine. The second time it happened i left my lights on and my batt. died and i got a jump from my friend and it wouldnt idle so i tried to drive it home without idleing and it starting idleing after a few minutes and hasnt happened since. i suggest to get a new battery or the batt. connections may be loose. Maybe your altenator is going bad but i doubt it.

Message: I can't believe how much better my 97 V6 ran after cleaning the AIS. Thank you so much for the advice people and I highly recomend performing this operation of cleaning the deposits from the AIS if your engine dies right after starting and you need to give it gas a little while for it to start idleing on it's own.

Message: could be IAC back of TB
could also be the belly pan on the intake that is
well known for leaking but once a little oil hits
it the seal will be ok.
The reason this happens is the steel plate mopar
uses does not expand and contract the same as the
alm manifold and takes its toll on the gaskit.
The next time this happens to me I am going to use
the billet alm replacement.
