Subject: Transmission Question IP: Logged
Message: I was looking at a 1993 Dak with the 3.9 and auto trans. While driving, as the engine reaches about 3500-4000 RPM in first gear, it sounds like some clatter and scraping in the transmission. This is the only gear that it does this in, and only at that RPM. I was wondering if this is the famed transmission noise that Dodges are known for, or is it a serious transmission problem. Thanks for the time and responses.

Message: With that many miles of it I would guess its time for a rebuild. My tranny wines up over 4000rpm (39500 miles on it), but its a truck it wasn't made to be quiet. My mom's Grand Cherokee's (40000 miles on it) tranny screams and wines when it gets over 3000rpm and I'm starting to think its faster than my dak BUT, it is so incredably unstable.

Message: I have a 93 v6 3.9.automatic. When going from first to second gear It will shimmy if going fast, but if slow it slips. It has 55000 miles. I'm told it needs a new transmission. How much should I expect to pay on a Used vs. Rebuilt vs. New. I would like a second opinion. It has been in this state since Oct. How long can it last Without replacing it and is it actually the transmission.

Message: according to the service manual , the scraping nosies is caused by a fault in one of the fluid circuts . in laymans terms the tranny is shot

Message: Rebuilds generally run around $1600-2000
The problem with rebuilds is quality... You just don't know what your getting unless your close friends with a local trans guy.
When you get it rebuilt insist on Kevlar bands and Alto racing clutches/steels. They arnt that much more than stock parts and you'll get that money back in longevity!!!
